The descendants of John Garlick of Padfield and Waterside.


Generation One.

John Garlick was born about 1773. He married Rebecca Hadfield, baptised 19 June 1768 in Glossop Parish Church, daughter of Thomas and Mary Hadfield (see Descendants of Jonathan Hadfield of Hadfield) on 2 January 1798 in Glossop Parish Church. They had nine children:
     George Garlick, born 20 April and baptised 3 June 1798 in Glossop Parish Church, died on 1 August 1832.
     Mary Garlick, born 30 November 1799 and baptised 5 January 1800 in Glossop Parish Church. Age given as 51 in 1851 census, housekeeper at the Anchor Inn. She married James Wagstaffe, born on 4 May and baptised on 27 May 1792 in Glossop, son of John Wagstaffe and Sarah Bennett (see Wagstaffe family of Bridge End) on 8 October 1851 in Glossop.
     Betty Garlick born 19 May 1802.
     Joseph Garlick born 13 May 1804.
     Sarah Garlick, born 27 March and baptised 11 May 1806 in Glossop Parish Church, died on 22 April 1829.
     Ellen Garlick born 1 January 1808.
     Clarissa Garlick, born 28 May and baptised 18 July 1810 in Glossop Parish Church, died on 1 July and buried 4 July 1818 in Glossop Parish Church. Described as of Lower Jumble when she died.
     Martha Garlick, born 8 January and baptised 1 March 1812 in Glossop Parish Church, died in 1893 in Aged 81. In the 1851 census, aged 39, barmaid at the Anchor Inn, Hadfield. In the 1861 census aged 49, boarder at Hadfield Lodge with her sister, Fanny, and brother in law, Edward Platt. She married William Platt, baptised 11 May 1798 in Tintwistle, son of George Platt and Evelyn Georgina Hadfield
(see The Platt family of Glossop) in 1864.
     Fanny Garlick baptised 5 February 1815.
In the 1841 census John is an Innkeeper aged 65. In 1851 he is a widower aged 77, Landlord of the Anchor Inn, Hadfield.
Rebecca died, aged 74, on 27 May 1840 and John Garlick died, aged 83, on 3 July 1857.

Generation Two.

Betty Garlick was born on 19 May and baptised on 21 June 1802 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Joseph Dewsnap, born on 9 November and baptised on 27 December 1801 in Glossop, son of James Dewsnap and Mary Wood (see Dewsnap family of Hadfield) on 23 August 1824 in Glossop Parish Church.

Joseph Garlick was born on 13 May and baptised on 18 June 1804 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Martha Moss on 23 January 1834 in Glossop Parish Church and they had four children:
     John Moss Garlick, baptised 16 November 1834 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Milicent Garlick baptised 25 September 1836.
     George Garlick baptised 15 July 1838.
     Sarah Garlick, baptised 2 August 1840 in Glossop Parish Church, died on 18 December 1842.
Joseph married Mary Bintcliffe, born 10 May 1809, on 27 February 1840 in Glossop Parish Church. They had six children:
     Mary Garlick, born 20 April and baptised 15 May 1842 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Charles Stone.
     Jane Garlick, born 23 February and baptised 7 April 1844 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Joseph Swales, born about 1843 in York.
     Robert Garlick born about 1846.
     Rebecca Garlick, born 18 September 1847 in Hadfield. She married George Sykes, born about 1853 in Cartworth, Yorks. In the 1881 census the family was living at Market St, Hollingworth.
     William Garlick, born 23 April 1849, died on 14 March 1850.
     Martha Garlick, born 8 February 1851, died on 1 March 1860.
Mary died on 3 November 1879.

Ellen Garlick was born on 1 January and baptised on 28 February 1808 in Glossop Parish Church. She married John Handforth, born about 1808 in Hayfield, on 7 February 1830 in Manchester Cathedral. They had three children:
     George Handforth, born about 1833.
     Sarah Handforth, born about 1839 in Stalybridge. She married Thomas Robinson, baptised 5 July 1835 in Glossop, son of William Robinson and Sarah Hadfield (see The Robinsons of Gnat Hole) on 6 July 1862 in Glossop Wesleyan Chapel.
     Mary Ellin Handforth, born about 1846.
In the 1851 census the family was at 58 Grosvenor Street Dukinfield, John aged 43, Joiner and cabinet maker employer. 1861 and 1871 at Chapel Street Glossop, master cotton spinner (Shepley Mill).
1881 census at Oak Cottage, 31 Princess Street, retired cotton spinner where Ellen's grandniece, Mary E Alsop (see The Alsop family of Glossop and Illinois) was a servant in the house.
Ellen died on 1 September 1881.
John Handforth died, aged 76, on 12 December 1884 and was buried at Glossop Parish Church.

Fanny Garlick was baptised on 5 February 1815 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Edward Platt, baptised 10 March 1803 in Tintwistle Independent, son of George Platt and Evelyn Georgina Hadfield (see The Platt family of Glossop) on 8 October 1842.

Generation Three.

Child of Betty Garlick.

John Dewsnap was baptised on 20 November 1824 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Martha Winterbottom and they had one daughter, Evelyn Georgina Dewsnap, born about 1865.

Children of Joseph Garlick.

Milicent Garlick was baptised on 25 September 1836 in Glossop Parish Church. She married John Hadfield Alsop, baptised 15 March 1836 in Glossop, son of James Alsop and Hannah Hadfield (see The Alsop family of Glossop and Illinois) on 6 April 1856.

George Garlick was baptised on 15 July 1838 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Sarah Micklethwaite, born about 1839 in Kirkburton (daughter of Benjamin Micklethwaite and Elizabeth Brown) on 16 December 1861 in Manchester Cathedral. They had three children:
     Martha Garlick.
     Fanny Garlick, born about 1865 in Hadfield.
     Joseph Micklethwaite Garlick.

Robert Garlick, born about 1846 in Hadfield. The 1881 census describes him as a 34 year old Annuitant, living at Main Road, Glossop Dale. He married Martha Hadfield, born 16 September 1859 in Hadfield, daughter of John Hadfield and Elizabeth Pye (see The descendants of John Hadfield, farmer of Hadfield) on 4 February 1880. They had seven children:
     Mary Garlick born 27 January 1881.
     Arthur Garlick, born 22 July 1883, died on 3 September 1916.
     Beatrice Garlick, born 24 August 1885, died on 3 November 1885.
     Nellie Garlick, born 26 June 1887, died on 6 February 1977.
     William Garlick born 12 February 1891.
     George Hadfield Garlick born 26 February 1895.
     James Hadfield Garlick born 21 May 1897.
Robert Garlick died on 19 February 1917.

Generation Four.

Child of John Dewsnap.

Evelyn Georgina Dewsnap was born in 1866 in Hadfield and baptised on 11 March 1866 in Glossop Parish Church. At the 1881 census she was aged 15, a servant for Edward & Fanny Platt at Padfield Lane (Edward was 3rd cousin twice removed of John Platt who she later married). She married John Platt, born 26 November 1865 in Glossop, son of Thomas and Harriet Smith Platt (see The Platt family of Glossop) in 1894 in Howardtown Wesleyan Chapel.

Children of Robert Garlick.

Mary Garlick was born on 27 January 1881 in Hadfield. She married Edmund Ogden, born 4 February 1884 in 5 Ebenezer St, Whitfield (son of John Ogden and Margaret Wharmby), baptised in United Methodist Free Church, Whitfield, on 13 August 1914 in St Andrew's Church, Hadfield.
Mary died on 29 April 1973 in Shire Hill Hospital, Glossop.
Edmund died on 8 April 1977 in Goyt Valley Home, New Mills.

William Garlick was born on 12 February 1891. He married Amy Newton, born 20 October 1896, on 20 October 1921.
Amy died on 11 August 1967.
William Garlick died on 29 November 1981.

George Hadfield Garlick was born on 26 February 1895. He married Dorothy Horrocks, born 16 December 1902, on 29 October 1924.
George Hadfield Garlick died on 29 August 1963.
Dorothy died on 24 June 1980.

James Hadfield Garlick was born on 21 May 1897. He married Laura Jackson, born 25 May 1900, on 10 March 1928.
Laura died in 1968.
James Hadfield Garlick was born on 21 May 1897, died on 4 January 1973.
