The Ham(p)son family of Whitfield.


The spelling of the surname (with or without the “p”) varies in the old records.

Generation One.

Robert and Sarah Hampson of Whitfield had two children:
     Elizabeth Hampson, baptised 18 March 1703/4 in Glossop, buried 3 March 1705/6 in Glossop.
     John Hampson baptised 2 July 1707.

Generation Two.

John Hampson was baptised on 2 July 1707 in Glossop. He became a clothier, farmer and husbandman in Whitfield. His wife Susan, was born about 1709. They had eight children:
     Elizabeth (Betty) Hampson baptised 11 May 1736.
     John Hamson born about 1739.
     Thomas Hampson born about 1740.
     James Hampson baptised 19 February 1745.
     Robert Hampson baptised 8 November/December 1747.
     Susan Hampson, baptised 14 February 1750 in Glossop.
     Joseph Hampson baptised 30 May 1752.
     Jordan Hampson baptised 30 June 1755.
Susan died on 23 April and was buried on 27 April 1795 in Glossop, aged 86, a widow.

Generation Three.

Elizabeth (Betty) Hampson was baptised on 11 May 1736 in Glossop. She married George Bennett, baptised 10 March 1730/31 in Glossop, son of John Bennett and Dorothy Dearnelley (see The Bennett family of Whitfield).

John Hamson was born about 1739, died 9 October 1793, buried 12 October 1793 in Glossop, aged 54. A husbandman/farmer of Whitfield, he married Betty Thornaly, baptised 30 August 1744 in Glossop (daughter of Robert Thornaly of Simmondley & Whitfield, tailor), on 16 September 1766 in Glossop. They had eight children:
     Ann Hampson, baptised 7 June 1767 in Glossop, died 20 September and buried 23 September 1785 in Glossop.
     Sarah Hampson.
     Betty Hampson, baptised 6 May 1770 in Glossop. She married someone named Wagstaffe but was widowed and married John McKnaught of Chapel en le Frith on 20 April 1808 in Glossop.
     Robert Hampson.
     Nancy Hampson, baptised 19 May 1776 in Glossop.
     John Hampson born about 1778.
     Hannah Hamson, born 26 July 1785, baptised 11 September 1785 in Glossop, buried 17 September 1796 in Glossop aged 11.
     Clarissa Hampson, born 25 August 1788, baptised 25 August 1788 in Glossop, died 21 September 1788, buried 22 September 1788 in Glossop, infant.
John Hamson died on 9 October and was buried on 12 October 1793 in Glossop, aged 54.
Betty died on 27 June and was buried on 30 June 1813 in Glossop, aged 69.

Thomas Hampson was born about 1740. A husbandman/farmer of Whitfield, he married Alice Wood, born about 1743, on 21 May 1765 in Glossop and they had two children:
     John Hampson.
     Thomas Hampson born about 1769.
Alice died on 13 December and was buried on 16 December 1793 in Glossop. John then married Eleanor Shaw born about 1747, on 18 February 1800 in Glossop.
Thomas Hampson was buried on 3 September 1818 in Glossop aged 78.
Eleanor was buried on 9 February 1819 in Glossop aged 72.

James Hampson was baptised on 19 February 1745 in Glossop. A farmer of Padfield (Blackshaw) and Whitfield, he married Sarah Goodison, born about 1747, daughter of John Goodison and Elizabeth Creswel (see A Goodison family of Glossop), on 1 January 1770 in Glossop. They had three children:
     Sarah Hampson.
     Joseph Hamson, baptised 16 September 1783 in Glossop.
     Roger Hampson, died 27 June 1788, buried 29 June 1788 in Glossop, infant.

Robert Hampson was baptised on 8 November or December 1747 in Glossop (the register is unclear as to the date). A husbandman of Whitfield, he married Mary Knott (daughter of John Knott), on 26 September 1773 in Glossop. They had three children:
     Betty Hampson, baptised 14 January 1776 in Glossop.
     Sally Hampson, born 2 January and baptised 8 February 1785 in Glossop.
     Martha Hampson, born 20 September and baptised 28 October 1787 in Glossop.

Joseph Hampson was baptised on 30 May 1752 in Glossop. Of Whitfield, he married Mary Lyne on 21 August 1797 in Glossop and they had seven children:
     Alice Hampson, born 15 November and baptised 25 December 1797 in Glossop.
     Esther Hampson, born 30 September and baptised 15 November 1799 in Glossop, buried 8 March 1818 in Glossop aged 18.
     Fanny Hampson, born 4 April and baptised 19 November 1801 in Charlesworth Top Chapel.
     Martha Hampson, born 2 December 1806, baptised 15 February 1807 in Charlesworth Top Chapel.
     George Hampson, born 14 June and baptised 20 July 1815 in New Mills, buried 22 May 1816 in Glossop, aged 1 of Whitfield.
     Mary Hampson, born 12 May and baptised 12 July 1816 in New Mills.
     Grace Hampson, born 12 May and baptised 12 July 1816 in New Mills.

Jordan Hampson was baptised on 30 June 1755 in Glossop. He is recorded in parish registers as a labourer of Jumball and a mason of Hurst. He married Mary (Molly) Hague (daughter of John Hague), on 16 February 1790 in Glossop and they had five children:
     John Hampson, born 23 July and baptised 29 August 1790 in Glossop, died 11 October and buried 13 October 1791 in Glossop, age 1 (died of a swelling of the lungs).
     Nancy Hampson, born 24 September and baptised 24 October 1792 in Glossop.
     Mally Hampson, born 15 December 1796, baptised 29 January 1797 in Glossop.
     Christopher Hampson born 25 October 1800.
     Thomas Hampson, born 24 November 1803, baptised 15 January 1804 in Glossop.

Generation Four.

Children of John Hamson.

Sarah Hampson married James Kelsall, a farmer, on 27 May 1802. They lived initially at Milltown, then Podnor, and had five children:
     Henry Kelsall, born 18 June and baptised 24 July 1803 in Glossop.
     John Kelsall, born 4 February and baptised 3 March 1805 in Glossop.
     Betty Hampson Kelsall, born 3 December 1807, baptised 3 January 1808 in Glossop.
     James Kelsall, born 7 March and baptised 7 May 1810 in Glossop (must have died an infant).
     James Kelsall, born 24 April and baptised 7 June 1812 in Glossop.

Robert Hampson was a cotton carder of Whitfield but is named in his brother John's will as a farmer of Malcoff, Chapel en le Frith. He married Jane (Jenny) MacLonney on 31 May 1796 in Glossop and they had eight children:
     Thomas Hampson, born about 1796, buried 15 July 1812 in Glossop aged 16.
     John Hampson born 21 September 1798.
     Jordan Hampson, born 29 January and baptised 1 March 1801 in Glossop, buried 5 June 1814 in Glossop aged 13.
     Alice Hampson, born 15 September and baptised 16 October 1803 in Glossop.
     Mary Hampson, born 20 May and baptised 15 June 1806 in Glossop, buried 23 April 1830 in Glossop aged 23.
     Martha Hampson, born 7 November and baptised 11 December 1808 in Glossop.
     Aaron Hampson, born 13 December 1811, baptised 26 January 1812 in Glossop.
     Robert Hampson, baptised 26 June 1814 in Glossop.

Nancy Hampson was baptised on 19 May 1776 in Glossop. She married Nathaniel Newton on 8 December 1794 at Saint Michael, Ashton Under Lyne. They had a daughter, Esther Newton, baptised on 27 September 1795 at Staleybridge, Old St George.

John Hampson was, born about 1778 and became a farmer in Whitfield and built the Crown Inn in Victoria Street. He married Hannah Bowden on 3 May 1809 in Glossop and they had eleven children:
     John Hampson, born 9 August 1809, baptised 18 September 1809 in Glossop.
     Nancy Hampson, born 21 December 1810, baptised 24 March 1811 in Glossop. She married Dan Nield, born 21 August 1800, son of Thomas Nield and Dorothy (Dolly) Shepley (see Nields of Chunal and Dinting), on 6 September 1830 in Glossop.
     Robert Hampson, born 8 March 1812, baptised 6 May 1812 in Glossop.
     Joseph Hampson.
     Betty Hampson, baptised 20 October 1816 in Glossop. She married John Pott on 22 February 1836 in Glossop.
     Thomas Hampson, baptised 14 February 1819 in Glossop, buried 8 June 1821 in Glossop, aged 2.
     George Hampson, baptised 24 May 1821 in Glossop. A publican at the Crown Inn, he married Alice Turner (daughter of James Turner, publican, of Rochdale) on 21 September 1847 at St James's Whitfield.
     Thomas Hampson, baptised 4 November 1823 in Glossop.
     Ann Hampson, baptised 26 February 1826 in Glossop. She married a man named Newton.
     Hannah Hampson, baptised 30 June 1828 in Glossop, buried 10 July 1831 in Glossop, aged 3.
     Sarah Hampson, baptised 5 June 1831 in Glossop, buried 29 June 1836 in Glossop, aged 5.
John Hampson died on 13 September 1857, aged 79.

Children of Thomas Hamson.

John Hampson of Whitfield, clothier/cotton spinner married Martha Broadbent (daughter of Joseph Broadbent) on 13 December 1787 in Glossop. They had seven children:
     John Hampson born 7 March 1788.
     Alice Hampson, born 31 December 1789, baptised 27 January 1790 in Glossop, died 18 October and buried 20 October 1790 in Glossop.
     Abraham Hampson born 6 December 1791.
     Isaac Hampson, born 26 July 1795, baptised 23 August 1795 in Glossop.
     Jacob Hampson, born 14 November and baptised 10 December 1797 in Glossop, buried 14 April 1815 in Glossop aged 17.
     Solomon Hampson born 19 May 1800.
     David Hampson born 29 September 1802.
Martha was buried on 1 September 1835 in Glossop aged 71.

Thomas Hampson was born about 1769. A clothier of Whitfield, he married Margaret (Peggy) Harrison (daughter of John Harrison), on 12 November 1789 in Glossop. They had six children:
     Sarah Hampson, born 16 April and baptised 17 May 1790 in Glossop, buried 3 November 1802 in Glossop aged 12.
     John Hampson, born 9 June and baptised 29 July 1792 in Charlesworth Top Chapel.
     Ann Hampson, born 10 August and baptised 18 September 1798 in Glossop.
     Ruth Hampson, baptised 11 November 1802 in Charlesworth Top Chapel. She married Daniel Bradbury on 4 February 1822 in Glossop.
     Thomas Hampson, born April and baptised 23 June 1805 in Charlesworth Top Chapel.
     Betty Hampson born 6 January 1807.
Thomas Hampson was buried on 8 November 1836 in Glossop.

Child of James Hampson.

Sarah Hampson was baptised on 13 August 1775 in Glossop. She married James Bennett, son of John Bennett and Mary (Molly) Rowbottom (see The Bennett family of Whitfield on 25 July 1799 in Glossop.

Child of Jordan Hampson.

Christopher Hampson was born on 25 October and baptised on 3 December 1800 in Glossop. A cotton spinner of Whitfield he married Elizabeth Hepworth on 14 November 1822 in Glossop. They had five children:
     Christopher Hampson was baptised on 16 June 1823 in Glossop. He married Ann Warhurst, baptised 3 April 1825 in Glossop, daughter of Timothy Warhurst (see A Warhurst family of Hadfield) on 15 October 1846 in Glossop.
     Sarah Hampson, baptised 7 January 1825 in Glossop.
     Milly Hague Hampson, baptised 21 October 1827 in Glossop.
     Hannah Hampson, baptised 18 March 1830 in Glossop.
     Martha Hampson, baptised 14 October 1832 in Glossop, buried 16 April 1833 in Littlemoor Independent, age 8 months, of Whitfield.
Christopher Hampson was buried on 18 December 1832 at Littlemoor Independent, age 32 of Whitfield.

Generation Five.

Child of Robert Hampson.

John Hampson was born on 21 September and baptised on 14 October 1798 in Glossop. Of Wren Nest & Jerrytown, a cotton spinner, he married Elizabeth Meginson on 19 September 1824 in Glossop. They had seven children:
     Eliza Hampson, baptised 23 December 1825 in Glossop, buried 20 July 1826 in Glossop, aged 8 months.
     Robert Hampson, baptised 2 May 1827 in Glossop.
     Joseph Hampson, born 23 August 1828, baptised 11 September 1828 in Littlemoor Independent.
     Aaron Hampson, born 18 August 1830, baptised 9 September 1830, buried 2 December 1831 in Glossop, infant.
     James Hampson, born 10 August 1832, baptised 7 October 1832 in Littlemoor Independent.
     Hannah Hampson, born 11 January 1835, baptised 1 March 1835 in Littlemoor Independent, buried 29 November 1837 in Glossop, aged 3.
     John Hampson, born 24 June 1837, baptised 22 July 1837 in Littlemoor Independent.
John Hampson was buried on 18 August 1850 at Littlemoor independent, aged 51.

Child of John Hampson and Hannah Bowden.

Joseph Hampson was baptised on 24 July 1814 in Glossop. He married Caroline Shepley, born 17 March 1812, daughter of Joshua Shepley and Mary Bennett (see The Shepley family of Old Glossop and Brookfield) on 22 November 1843 in Glossop Parish Church. They had a daughter, Mary Shepley Hampson, born about 1845, died 4 May 1863 in Glossop, aged 18.

John Hampson was born on 7 March and baptised on 6 April 1788 in Glossop. A cotton spinner of Whitfield/Littlemoor, he married Mary Newton on 20 August 1809 in Glossop. They had ten children:
     Abraham Hampson, born 8 February and baptised 18 March 1810 in Glossop, buried 9 April 1813 in Glossop aged 3.
     Elijah Hampson, born 16 February and baptised 30 March 1812 in Glossop.
     Nancy Hampson, baptised 2 October 1814 in Glossop, buried 18 June 1818 in Glossop aged 3.
     Martha Hampson, born 7 March and baptised 6 April 1817 in Glossop Wesleyan Methodist, buried 30 November 1825 in Glossop aged 8.
     Jacob Hampson, baptised 20 September 1819 in Glossop.

Abraham Hampson was born on 6 December 1791 and baptised on 15 January 1792 in Top Chapel, Charlesworth. He was also baptised on 7 November 1813 in Glossop parish church. A cotton spinner, he married Ann Bowden on 3 July 1814 in Glossop. They lived at Whitfield, moved to Hayfield and back to Littlemoor and had twelve children:
     Abraham Hampson, baptised 13 November 1814 in Glossop, buried 18 April 1815 in Glossop aged 27 weeks.
     Abraham Hampson, baptised 31 March 1816 in Glossop, buried 19 October 1823 in Glossop.
     Alice Hampson, baptised 6 December 1818 in Glossop.
     Abner Hampson, baptised 4 February 1821 in Glossop.
     Ann Hampson, baptised 22 March 1823 in Glossop. She married Christopher Harrison of Littlemoor on 12 September 1847 in Littlemoor Independent.
     Grace Hampson, baptised 8 May 1825 in Glossop. She married Joseph Heap of Littlemoor on 14 September 1852 in Littlemoor Independent.
     Matty Hampson, baptised 18 March 1827 in Glossop.
     David Hampson, baptised 16 February 1829 in Glossop.
     Mary Hampson, baptised 12 January 1831 in Glossop.
     Elizabeth Hampson, baptised 14 July 1833 in Glossop.

Solomon Hampson was, born on 19 May and baptised on 20 June 1800 in Glossop. A cotton spinner, he married Jane Shaw on 15 September 1823 in Glossop. They lived in Whitfield, moved to Hayfield and then to Ashton under Lyne and had five children:
     Valentine Hampson, baptised 2 March 1824 in Glossop.
     Mary Hampson, baptised 9 July 1826 in Glossop.
     Betty Hampson, baptised 14 September 1828 in Glossop.
     Susanna Hampson, baptised 19 February 1832 in Glossop.
     Martha Ann Hampson, baptised 29 November 1835 in Glossop.

David Hampson was born on 29 September and baptised on 31 October 1802 in Glossop. A shoemaker of Hadfield/Wooley Bridge/Waterside, he married Hannah Dewsnap, born on 25 November 1803, daughter of James Dewsnap and Mary Wood (see Dewsnap family of Hadfield) on 13 December 1824 in Glossop. They had five children:
     Mary Hampson, baptised 31 January 1825 in Glossop.
     Martha Hampson.
     Thomas Hampson, baptised 16 August 1829 in Glossop.
     Betty Dewsnap Hampson, baptised 28 July 1833 in Glossop. She married Joseph Swindall on 20 April 1856 in Glossop Wesleyan Methodist. Betty was described as a weaver, aged 22, and Joseph as of Hadfield, a roller coverer age 27, when they married.
     Elijah Hampson, born 12 April and baptised 28 June 1835 in Hadfield Wesleyan. He was also baptised on 2 August 1835 in Glossop parish church.

Child of Thomas Hampson.

Betty Hampson was born on 6 January and baptised on 12 January 1807 in Charlesworth Top Chapel. She married Joseph Shepley, born 27 July 1804, son of John Shepley and Mary Hegginbottom (see A Shepley family of Chunal and Crosscliffe), on 27 February 1826 in Glossop.

Generation Six.

Child of David Hampson.

Martha Hampson was baptised 13 January 1827 in Glossop. She married James Wood, baptised 7 October 1825 in Glossop Parish Church, son of Thomas Wood and Anne Sheppard (see A Wood family of Whitfield).
