A Warhurst family of Hadfield.


In years gone by there were many Warhursts in Hadfield but available records mean that links between them can not always be proved.

Generation One.

Thomas Warhurst and Anna Howe married on 22 July 1712 in Glossop Parish Church. They had three identified children:
     Mary Warhurst, baptised 28 November 1714 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 2 February 1714/15 at Glossop Parish Church.
     Thomas Warhurst.
     Anna Warhurst, baptised 30 March 1718 in Glossop Parish Church.

Generation Two.

Thomas Warhurst of Hadfield, carpenter & joiner, was baptised on 4 January 1715/16 in Glossop Parish Church. He and his wife Betty had nine identified children:
     Thomas Warhurst born 24 January 1746.
     Betty Warhurst, baptised 2 October 1747 in Glossop.
     Jesse Warhurst born about 1749.
     Mary Warhurst.
     James Warhurst.
     Ann Warhurst.
     Nancy Warhurst, born about 1765, buried 26 April 1832 in Glossop parish church aged 67.
     Timothy Warhurst born about 1767.
     Matthew Warhurst born about 1770.
Betty died aged 67 on 1 May and was buried on 4 May 1787 at Glossop parish church.
Thomas Warhurst died aged 76 on 25 January and was buried on 27 January 1792 at Glossop parish church.

Generation Three.

Thomas Warhurst of Hadfield, brush stock maker/labourer, was born on 24 January 1746. He married Sarah Mellison (daughter of Thomas Mellison) on 27 February 1763 in Glossop parish church. They had two identified children:
     Martha Warhurst, born 2 February and baptised 7 February 1783 in Glossop.
     James Warhurst, died 4 July 1792 aged 3, buried 6 July 1792 in Glossop Parish Church.

Jesse Warhurst was born about 1749. Parish records describe him as a clothier and roller turner of Hadfield. He married Nancy Goodison, daughter of John Goodison and Elizabeth Creswel (see A Goodison family of Glossop) on 1 January 1770 in Glossop Parish Church and they had five identified children:
     Kerenhappuch Warhurst born about 1771.
     Josral Warhurst born 7 March 1784.
     Joyce Warhurst, born 18 July 1787, baptised 4 February 1788 in Glossop, buried 13 July 1837 in Glossop aged 49.
     Jasper Warhurst born about 1782.
     Jesse Warhurst born about 1773.
Jesse Warhurst died aged 68 on 29 July and was buried on 1 August 1817 at Glossop Parish Church. Nancy obviously predeceased him as he was described as a widowed farmer when the administration of his estate was granted in 1840.

Mary Warhurst, baptised 25 December 1751 in Glossop. She married John Newton of Hadfield, wheelwright (son of Benjamin Newton), on 2 June 1783 in Glossop parish church. They had five identified children:
     John Newton, born 19 May 1784, baptised 31 May 1784 in Glossop.
     Isaac Newton, born 30 December 1785, baptised 4 January 1786 in Glossop.
     Joseph Newton, born 1 January 1788, baptised 4 February 1788 in Glossop.
     Nancy Newton, born 2 January 1790, baptised 9 January 1790 in Glossop.
     Hannah Newton, born 27 May 1792, baptised 6 June 1792 in Glossop.

James Warhurst of Hadfield, labourer/spinner, was baptised on 20 January 1760 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Mary Bancroft (daughter of William Bancroft), on 13 January 1785 in Glossop Parish Church. They had eleven identified children:
     Mary Warhurst born 26 March 1785.
     Martha Warhurst, born and baptised 26 March 1785 in Glossop parish church, died 26 March and buried 27 March 1785 at Glossop parish church, infant.
     Sarah Warhurst born 17 November 1786.
     James Warhurst, born 25 July and baptised 24 August 1788 in Glossop parish church. He must have died young as his brother, also James, was born in 1795.
     Elizabeth (Betty) Warhurst, born 18 July and baptised 15 August 1790 in Glossop parish church, died 28 March and buried 30 March 1792 at Glossop parish church aged 1.
     James Warhurst, born 21 May and baptised 29 June 1795 in Glossop parish church, buried 19 March 1797 at Glossop parish church aged 2.
     Thomas Warhurst, born 8 August and baptised 4 September 1797 in Glossop parish church.
     John Warhurst, born 24 December 1799, baptised 23 February 1800 in Glossop parish church.
     Joseph Warhurst, born 24 December 1799, baptised 23 February 1800 in Glossop parish church, buried 2 September 1800 at Glossop parish church aged 8 months.
     Penninah Warhurst born 23 September 1802.
     William Warhurst, born 16 May 1805, baptised 24 June 1805 in Glossop parish church, buried 7 July 1805 at Glossop parish church, infant.

Ann Warhurst. She married Nehemiah Groves of Hadfield, linen weaver on 7 May 1785 in Glossop. They had one identified child:
     Betty Groves, born 6 February and baptised 6 April 1788 in Glossop parish church.

Timothy Warhurst was born about 1767. In the 1841 census his age was recorded as 74, joiner at Mousley. He married Deborah Williamson and they had six identified children:
     Mary Warhurst, born about 1790, died 22 January and buried 25 January 1811 at Glossop parish church aged 21.
     Timothy Warhurst born 22 March 1795.
     John Warhurst, born 3 July and baptised 19 August 1798 in Glossop parish church.
     Abel Warhurst, born 31 July and baptised 11 December 1801 in Glossop parish church, died 21 December 1826, buried 24 December 1826 at Glossop parish church aged 25.
     Edward Warhurst, born 26 April and baptised 2 July 1804 in Glossop parish church.
     Issachar Warhurst born 16 June 1808.
Deborah died aged 81 and was buried on 28 October 1846 at Glossop parish church.
Timothy Warhurst died aged 81 on 9 September and was buried on 13 September 1848 at Glossop parish church.
Both were living in Staleybridge when they died.

Matthew Warhurst of Hadfield was born about 1770. He married Jane (Jenny) Cooke (daughter of James Cooke), on 5 May 1791 in Glossop parish church. They had two identified children:
     James Warhurst born 30 August 1791.
     Joseph Warhurst, born 14 June and baptised 5 July 1802 in Glossop parish church, buried 12 February 1803 at Glossop parish church aged 8 months.
Jane died aged 38 and was buried on 13 April 1803 at Glossop parish church.
Mathew married Peggy Shaw on 22 April 1804 in Glossop parish church and they had two identified children:
     Elizabeth Warhurst, born 21 March and baptised 18 April 1808 in Glossop parish church.
     Joseph Warhurst, born 27 June and baptised 25 August 1811 in Glossop parish church.
Matthew Warhurst died aged 62 and was buried on 15 April 1832 at Glossop parish church.

Generation Four.

Children of Jesse Warhurst.

Kerenhappuch Warhurst was born about 1771. Her age is calculated from the fact that she died on 2 February 1845 and was aged 74 according to the register index. The 1841 census lists a Caranapoch Bramhall aged 70.
Kerenhappuch had a daughter, Emm Warhurst, who was baptised on 15 November 1789 in Mottram as the illegitimate daughter of Keren-Happuch Warhurst of Hadfield.
She married John Garlick of Lower Barn on 23 August 1790 in Manchester Cathedral. Kerenhappuch was pregnant when John died “of a bloody flux”, aged 22, on 1 March and was buried on 4 March 1791 in Glossop church yard. She gave birth to a daughter, Nancy Garlick, who was baptised on 27 March 1791 in Mottram as the daughter of Keren-happuch Garlick of Lower Barn. Nancy died on 14 July and was buried on 16 July 1792 in Glossop church yard.
Kerenhappuch then married Joseph Bramhall on 22 November 1792 in Glossop (see A Bramhall family of Glossop and Hadfield).

Josral Warhurst (recorded as Jezreel/Jezareel in some parish register entries.) was born on 7 March and baptised on 31 May 1784 in Glossop parish church, buried 27 November 1842 at Glossop parish church, age recorded as 61. He is recorded as a roller turner of Little Padfield and, in the 1841 census, a Roller Maker at Padfield. He married Ann Bridge, on 6 October 1803 in Glossop Parish Church and they had ten identified children:
     Nancy Warhurst born 28 October 1803.
     Thomas Warhurst, born 11 July and baptised 18 August 1806 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Esau Warhurst, born 24 May 1808 in Little Padfield, baptised 2 March 1813 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 16 August 1857 at Glossop parish church age 48.
     Jacob Warhurst born 24 May 1808, twin of Esau.
     Betty Warhurst, born in Little Padfield, baptised 2 March 1813 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 28 August 1825 in Glossop church yard aged 13.
     Mariah Warhurst, baptised 15 October 1815 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Josiah Warhurst born in 1817.
     Mary Ann Warhurst, born in Little Padfield, baptised 9 April 1820 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 25 April 1885 in Glossop cemetery aged 64.
     John Goodison Warhurst.
     Betty Warhurst, born about 1827.
Ann was buried on 28 November 1841 at Glossop parish church, her age being recorded as 59.
Josral Warhurst was buried on 27 November 1842 at Glossop parish church. His age was recorded as 61.

Jasper Warhurst was born about 1782. He was described as a carrier of Hadfield when daughter Eliza was baptised and as a farmer of Hadfield when he obtained administration of his father's estate in 1840, as the eldest son. He married Betty Dewsnap, daughter of John Dewsnap and Deborah Shaw (see Dewsnap family of Glossop), on 31 December 1806 in Glossop Parish Church. They had two identified children:
     Uriah Warhurst, born about 1807, buried 3 May 1808 at Glossop parish church aged 1.
     Eliza Warhurst, baptised 13 January 1827 in Glossop Parish Church.
Betty died aged 59 and was buried on 21 August 1846 in Glossop parish church.
Jasper Warhurst died aged 70 on 31 March 1852.

Jesse Warhurst was, born about 1773. He is described in parish register entries as of Hadfield and Warth House, a farmer and tanner. The administration of his estate, obtained by son Jasper in 1845 describes him as a common carrier of Brookfield. He married Sarah Eley (Heeley in some records) on 16 April 1801 in Glossop Parish Church. They had seven identified children:
     Jesse Warhurst, born 5 August and baptised 20 September 1802 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Betty Warhurst, born 2 May and baptised 8 June 1806 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Thomas Warhurst, born 25 January and baptised 6 May 1808 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Joseph Warhurst, born 3 May and baptised 6 September 1809 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Sarah Warhurst, born 18 September 1811, baptised 29 April 1815 in Glossop Parish Church.
     John Warhurst, born 26 May 1812, baptised 29 April 1815 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Jasper Warhurst (Jesper in some records), born 15 September 1814, baptised 29 April 1815 in Glossop Parish Church, died 18 April 1848 aged 34. Of Brookfield, cotton spinner, he married Hannah Marsden on 18 September 1837 in St Paul, Ashton under Lyne. Their son, Alfred Warhurst, married Sarah Elizabeth Cooper in 1866 at Ashton under Lyne. He died, aged 31, in 1870 and Sarah subsequently married Harold Fielding (see Descendants of John Fielding of Whitfield 1674)
     William Warhurst, baptised 15 September 1817 in Glossop Parish Church, died 27 March 1819 aged 2.
Jesse Warhurst died aged 46 on 21 March and was buried on 24 March 1819 at Glossop Parish Church.
Sarah died aged 72 on 3 May 1844. Administration of her estate was obtained in 1844 by son Thomas.

Children of James Warhurst.

Mary Warhurst was born and baptised on 26 March 1785 in Glossop Parish Church. She had two identified children:
     Betty Warhurst, born 16 April 1809 (of Lower Barn, illegit.), baptised 23 July 1809 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 1 May 1810 at Glossop parish church aged 1 (recorded as the daughter of James & Mary).
     Jane Warhurst, born 6 April 1812 (of Lower Barn, illegit.), baptised 4 May 1812 in Glossop Parish Church.

Sarah Warhurst was born on 17 November and baptised on 17 December 1786 in Glossop Parish Church. She married George Rolley on 3 January 1811 in Glossop Parish Church. They had one identified child:
     Charlotte Rolley, born 5 June 1811 (of Lower Barn), baptised 14 July 1811 in Glossop Parish Church.

Penninah Warhurst was born on 23 September and baptised 1 November 1802 in Glossop Parish Church. She had one identified child:
     Henry Warhurst, baptised 6 August 1823 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 12 August 1823 at Glossop Parish Church, infant.
Penninah Warhurst died aged 21 and was buried on 15 January 1824 at Glossop Parish Church.

Timothy Warhurst was born on 22 March and baptised on 6 May 1795 in Glossop Parish Church. He became a carpenter/joiner in Hollingworth. He married Kitty Bradshaw on 23 February 1819 at Glossop Parish Church and they had three identified children:
     Mary Warhurst, baptised 2 July 1821 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Abel Warhurst, baptised 14 January 1823, buried 9 December 1824 aged 11 months.
     Ann Warhurst, baptised 3 April 1825 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Christopher Hampson, son of Christopher Hampson and Elizabeth Hepworth (see The Ham(p)son family of Whitfield), on 15 October 1846 in Glossop Parish Church.

Issachar Warhurst was born on 16 June and baptised on 20 October 1808 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Nancy Arandale on 7 June 1830 in Manchester Cathedral. They had two identified children:
     Edward Warhurst, born about 1832.
     Abel Warhurst, born about1834.

Child of Matthew Warhurst.

James Warhurst was born on 30 August and baptised on 21 September 1791 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Charlotte Epworth, born 1796 in Lindley, Yorkshire, on 24 May 1814 in Mottram parish church. Charlotte was a minor so the marriage was by licence granted 23 May 1814 on the consent of Ruth Epworth (widow) of Bradley in the parish of Huddersfield, Charlotte's mother. Charlotte was wrongly named as Catherine in the marriage register. James and Charlotte had three identified children:
     George Warhurst.
     Jane Warhurst, baptised 25 May 1817 in Glossop Parish Church, died 3 November 1818 aged 19 months.
     Thomas Warhurst, baptised 20 September 1819 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 6 February 1820 at Glossop parish church (aged 6 months).
James Warhurst died aged 65 and was buried on 9 January 1856 at Glossop parish church.
Charlotte died aged 82 and was buried on 19 November 1876 in Glossop cemetery.

Generation Five.

Children of Josral Warhurst.

Nancy Warhurst was born 28 October 1803 and baptised 4 January 1804 in Glossop Parish Church. She had one identified child:
     Hannah Bowden Warhurst was born about 1832 in Padfield and baptised on 9 August 1832 in Glossop parish church. She married John Platt, son of James Platt and Ann Warhurst, at Ashton under Lyne on 2 January 1862. Hannah died in January 1883 and John remarried to Clara Richardson on 4 Novenber 1883. John and Clara had a daughter, Clara Elizabeth Ann Platt, in 1886.
Nancy Warhurst died aged 72 and was buried on 1 July 1879 in Glossop cemetery.

Jacob Warhurst was born on 24 May 1808 in Little Padfield and baptised on 2 March 1813 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 26 February 1870 in Glossop cemetery, age recorded as 60. He and his brother Esau were twins. He married Ann Lewes on 21 January 1831 in Glossop Parish Church.. Jacob and Ann had five identified children:
     Nancy Warhurst, born in Hadfield, baptised 19 October 1831 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 28 October 1831 in Glossop parish church, infant.
     Mary Warhurst, born in New York, Charlesworth, baptised 7 April 1833 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Elizabeth Warhurst born about 1834.
     William Warhurst, born about 1837.
     Eliza Warhurst, born in 1839.
Jacob Warhurst was buried on 26 February 1870 in Glossop cemetery, his age being recorded as 60.

Josiah Warhurst was born in 1817 in Little Padfield and baptised on 29 September 1817 in Glossop Parish Church. In the 1841 census his name was wrongly recorded as Jesse. He married Mary Broadbent, born 18 September 1819 in Padfield (daughter of Abraham Broadbent and Sarah Siddall), baptised 17 October 1819 in Hadfield Wesleyan Chapel, on 21 May 1843 in Manchester Cathedral. They had five identified children:
     Henry Warhurst, born 1844 in Glossop.
     Sarah Warhurst, born 1848 in Glossop.
     Jezreel Warhurst, born 1853 in Glossop.
     Alice Broadbent Warhurst, born 1856 in Glossop.
     Ann Warhurst, born 1859 in Glossop.
Mary died aged 68 and was buried on 17 June 1888 in Glossop cemetery.
Josiah Warhurst died aged 71 and was buried on 9 December 1888 in Glossop cemetery.

John Goodison Warhurst was born in Padfield and baptised on 4 May 1822 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Betty Hadfield, born in Padfield (daughter of Robert Hadfield and Betty Bradshaw (see A Hadfield family of Deepclough), on 9 December 1851 in Glossop Parish Church.
Betty was the widow of Samuel Berry and had three children from that marriage:
     Sophia Berry, born 15 June 1842. She married widower Benjamin Goldthorpe on 20 November 1871 at St James', Whitfield.
     John Berry born about 1846.
     Mary Ann Berry born in 1849.
Betty also had a daughter, Ellen Hadfield, born in 1839.
John and Betty had three identified children:
     Jezreel Warhurst, born 1852 in Glossop, died 1853 in Glossop.
     Jacob Warhurst, baptised 2 May 1855 in Glossop Parish Church. He was a soldier as he is recorded in the 1911 census as a 56 year old army pensioner living with his brother Thomas.
     Thomas Hadfield Warhurst born 25 March 1858.
John Goodison Warhurst died aged 67 and was buried on 8 March 1890 at Glossop parish church in the same grave as his great uncle, Timothy Warhurst (born 1767 & buried 13 September 1848 at Glossop aged 81).
Betty died aged 80 (of Wellgate) and was buried on 20 September 1902 in Glossop parish church.

Child of Matthew Warhurst.

George Warhurst was born in Padfield and baptised on 20 April 1815 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Eliza Shaw, born about 1824 in Cumberworth, Yorks (daughter of Joshua Shaw), on 19 November 1848 in St Paul's, Stayley. They had seven identified children:
     Edwin Warhurst born in 1847.
     Jane Warhurst, born 1850 in Glossop, buried 10 November 1850 at Glossop parish church, infant.
     Harriet Warhurst born in 1852 in Glossop.
     Issachar Warhurst, born in 1853 in Glossop, baptised 29 October 1853 in Glossop Parish Church, buried 1 September 1872 in Glossop cemetery aged 18.
     An unnamed son born in 1856 in Glossop. This was possibly a still birth as no baptism, burial or civil death registration has been found.
     Charles Warhurst, born 1857 in Glossop, buried 18 November 1857 at Glossop parish church aged 5 months.
     Charlotte Warhurst, born 1863 in Glossop, buried 24 April 1912 in Glossop cemetery aged 48.
George Warhurst died aged 58 and was buried on 17 March 1874 in Glossop cemetery.
Eliza died aged 70 and was buried on 4 November 1893 in Glossop cemetery.

Generation Six.

Child of Jacob Warhurst.

Elizabeth Warhurst was born about 1834. She married Thomas Croston, baptised 31 July 1836 in Mellor (son of Margaret Croston), on 25 June 1854 in St. John, Dukinfield and they had three identified children:
     Jezreel Warhurst Croston born about 1857.
     Samuel Howard Croston born about 1859.
     William Henry Croston born 1871 in Glossop.
Elizabeth died in 1903 in Chorlton aged 68.

Child of John Goodison Warhurst.

Thomas Hadfield Warhurst was born on 25 March 1858 in Glossop. He married Emma Jane Rowland, born in Bakewell (daughter of Isaac Rowland) on 29 March 1875 in St James', Whitfield. They had seven identified children:
     John Thomas Warhurst, born 1875 in Glossop, buried 18 April 1877 in Glossop cemetery aged 1 year 10 months.
     Nancy Ellen Warhurst, born 5 October 1876 in Glossop. She married Herbert Clough on 16 November 1901 in St. Michael, Ashton Under Lyne. Herbert died aged 54 and was buried on 29 March 1930 in Glossop cemetery aged 54. Nancy died aged 67 and was buried on 14 March 1944 in Glossop cemetery.
     John Warhurst, born 1879 in Glossop, buried 8 November 1879 in Glossop cemetery aged 8 months.
     Thomas Hadfield Warhurst, born 1881 in Glossop. He married Avis Salt, born 1882 in Glossop (daughter of Charles Salt), on 18 August 1902 in Glossop parish church. Thomas (of 3 Chadwick Street) died aged 56 on 14 January and was buried on 18 January 1938 in Glossop cemetery aged 56. Avis (of 3 Chadwick Street) died aged 70 and was buried on 31 December 1952 in Glossop cemetery.
     Sophia Warhurst born 1884.
     Robert Hadfield Warhurst, born 1885 in Glossop. He married Maria Moss in 1909. Robert, of 43 Market Street, Hollingworth, died on 24 August 1946.
     William Hadfield Warhurst, born 12 May 1890 in Glossop. He married Mary Hannah Hammond, born 20 November 1890, in 1912 in Glossop. William, of 82 Victoria Street, died aged 68 on 24 November and was buried on 27 November 1958 in Glossop cemetery. Mary Hannah died aged 82 and was buried on 16 January 1973 in Glossop cemetery.
Emma Jane died aged 47 and was buried on 18 April 1902 in Glossop cemetery.
Thomas Hadfield Warhurst died aged 86 and was buried on 12 April 1944 in Glossop cemetery.

Children of George Warhurst.

Edwin Warhurst was born in 1847 in Glossop before George and Eliza married. His birth was registered in the name Edwin Shaw but he was always recorded as Edwin Warhurst in censuses. He married Nancy Howard, baptised 25 August 1850 in Glossop Parish Church (daughter of Daniel Howard and Mary Ann Schofield), on 29 May 1871 in Tabernacle, Glossop. They had four identified children:
     Eliza Ann Warhurst, born 1872 in Glossop, buried 14 July 1872 in Glossop cemetery aged 6 weeks.
     Harriet Howard Warhurst, born 8 June 1874 in Glossop, baptised 5 July 1874 in Tabernacle, Glossop, buried 21 June 1918 in Glossop cemetery aged 44.
     Daniel Warhurst, born 1878 in Glossop, died 1879 in Glossop.
     Fred Warhurst, born 21 August 1886.
Edwin Warhurst died aged 83 and was buried on 26 March 1931 in Glossop cemetery.
Nancy died aged 82 and was buried on 28 May 1932 in Glossop cemetery.

Harriet Warhurst was baptised on 23 May 1852 in Glossop Parish Church. She had one child:
     Walter Warhurst, born in 1894 in Stalybridge, died 17 October 1918 on active service and buried in Premont British Cemetery.
Harriet died aged 76 and was buried on 15 December 1928 in Glossop cemetery.

Generation Seven.

Child of Thomas Hadfield Warhurst.

Sophia Warhurst was born in 1884 in Glossop. In the 1891 census she was recorded as the adopted daughter of her step aunt, Sophia (Berry) Goldthorpe at 12 Derby Street, Glossop. In the 1901 census she was recorded as Sophia Goldthorpe, niece of her step aunt, Sophia (Berry) Goldthorpe at 12 Derby Street, Glossop. She married Joseph Howard (son of John and Betsey Howard), in 1906 in Glossop. They had one child:
     Cyril Howard born in 1908 in Glossop.
Sophia died aged 24 and was buried on 5 February 1908 in Glossop cemetery.
Joseph Howard died aged 56 on 12 March 1956.

Child of Edwin Warhurst.

Fred Warhurst was, born on 21 August 1886 in Glossop and baptised on 10 October 1886 in Tabernacle, Glossop at 7 weeks old, died 13 June 1962 in Ashton General Hospital (of 57 Manor Park Road), buried 15 June 1962 in Glossop cemetery aged 74. He married Ada Devenar Boardman, born 22 October 1893 in Glossop, daughter of James K Boardman and Annie E Preston (see The Boardman family of Castleton and Glossop, blacksmiths), in 1921 in Glossop.
Fred Warhurst (of 57 Manor Park Road) died aged 74 on 13 June 1962 in Ashton General Hospital and was buried on 15 June 1962 in Glossop cemetery.
Ada died aged 86 and was buried on 22 November 1979 in Glossop cemetery.
