A Shepley family of Chunal and Crosscliffe.
There were Shepleys at Chunal from at least the 16th century. Thomas Shepley, husbandman of Chunal, had his will proved at Lichfield on 23 April 1569. This family is probably descended from the same line but there is insufficient evidence to show the link.
Generation One.
Robert Shepley senior, of Chunal, yeoman, was buried on 26 January 1740 at Glossop. He married Sarah Rollinson if Chunal on 7 January 1710/11 in Glossop. They had two children:
Robert Shepley, baptised 29 October 1711.
William Shepley, baptised 23 May 1714 in Glossop.
Sarah was buried on 10 June 1730 at Glossop.
Robert Shepley was buried on 26 January 1740 at Glossop.
Generation Two.
Robert Shepley was baptised on 29 October 1711 in Glossop. Of Chunal, husbandman and farmer, he inherited messuages and tenements at Chunal from his father. He and his wife Sarah had five children:
Hannah Shepley, baptised 12 May 1739 in Glossop.
John Shepley, baptised 30 August 1744 .
Robert Shepley, baptised 24 December 1746.
Sally Shepley, baptised 29 September 1749.
Mary Shepley, baptised 4 September 1754.
Robert Shepley was buried on 25 May 1759 in Glossop.
Sarah was buried on 16 December 1800 in Glossop (of Chunal, aged 90, widow).
Generation Three.
John Shepley was, baptised on 30 August 1744 in Glossop. He married Martha Platt, born about 1742 (daughter of John Platt Of Whimsley, Prestbury, Cheshire). They had two children:
John Shepley, born about 1778.
Hannah Shepley, born 18 September and baptised 19 September 1784 in Glossop, died 12 February and buried 14 February 1785 at Glossop (Infant).
Martha died on 18 July and was buried on 20 July 1794 at Glossop.
John remarried to Ann Drinkwater, born about 1746, on 20 February 1803 at Glossop. Ann died aged 66 and was buried at Glossop on 18 February 1812.
John Shepley was buried on 27 November 1823 at Glossop (aged 79 of Chunal).
Robert Shepley was baptised on 24 December 1746 in Glossop. He is recorded in parish register entries as a clothier of Crosscliffe, Lower Mill & Tintwistle. He married Martha Kenworthy, born about 1755 (daughter of William Kenworthy), on 3 December 1777 in Glossop, They had seven children:
Hannah Shepley, born about 1780, buried 8 May 1799 at Glossop, aged 19.
Mary Shepley, born 2 October and baptised 30 October 1783 in Glossop, died 31 December 1783 and buried 1 January 1784 at Glossop (Infant).
John Shepley, born 17 December 1784 and baptised 13 January 1785 in Glossop, buried 5 March 1797 in Glossop, age 12.
Betty Shepley, born 18 October and baptised 2 December 1790 in Glossop.
Sally Shepley, born 30 April and baptised 30 May 1793 in Glossop, buried 30 November 1796 at Glossop age 3.
Wright Shepley, born 14 November and baptised 25 December 1795 in Glossop, buried 30 November 1796 at Glossop age 1.
Sarah Shepley, born 17 November 1796, baptised 5 January 1797 in Glossop.
Robert Shepley was buried on 10 July 1813 at Glossop (age 67, of Padfield).
Martha was buried on 26 February 1837 at Glossop (of Duckinfield aged 82).
Sally Shepley, baptised 29 September 1749 in Glossop. She married a man named Saxton. They had a son, William Saxton.
Mary Shepley, baptised 4 September 1754 in Glossop. She married Jeremiah Hollingworth on 3 February 1778 in Glossop. They had two children: Betty Hollingworth and William Hollingworth.
Generation Four.
John Shepley was born about 1778. He was described as a warehouseman and bookkeeper of Chunall in parish register records; in the 1841 census he is age 60, Farmer of Chunal. His first marriage was on 7 February 1804 in Glossop to Mary Hegginbottom, born about 1784. They had nine children:

Martha Shepley, born 16 April and baptised 8 June 1866 in Glossop.
John Shepley, baptised 4 September 1808 in Hayfield, buried 21 December 1832 in Glossop (aged 24 of Chunal).
Mary Shepley, born 21 October 1810, baptised 11 April 1813 in Glossop, buried 21 April 1813 at Glossop aged 2½.
Elizabeth Shepley, baptised 11 April 1813 in Glossop, died 7 August 1833 in Glossop.
Samuel Shepley, born 28 January and baptised 14 February 1815 in Littlemoor chapel. 1841 census age given as 25. He married Mary Hadfield, daughter of Joseph Hadfield and Mary Lee (see The descendants of James Goddard of Waterside) on 27 July 1845 in Glossop Parish Church.
Mary Hegginbottom Shepley, born 28 March and baptised 16 April 1817 in Littlemoor Independent. 1841 census age given as 20.
Robert Shepley, baptised 28 February 1820 in Glossop Parish Church. 1841 census age given as 20.
Eliza Shepley, born 27 August and baptised 15 September 1824 in Glossop Wesleyan Methodist. 1841 census age given as 15.
Mary died aged 44 and was buried on 23 March 1828 in Glossop.
John married Betty Harrison on 9 June 1828 in Glossop, Betty already had a daughter, Mary Harrison, who had been baptised on 26 August 1820 in Glossop. John and Betty had six children:
William Shepley, baptised 31 May 1829.
Ann Shepley, baptised 9 June 1833 in Glossop. 1841 census age given as 10.
Nancy Shepley, baptised 9 June 1833 in Glossop. 1841 census age given as 8.
Thomas Shepley, baptised 31 May 1835 in Glossop. 1841 census age given as 6.
James Shepley, baptised 4 June 1837 in Glossop. 1841 census age given as 4. He married Nancy Aspen on 3 June 1864 in Marple Bridge.
Nelly Shepley. 1841 census age given as 1.
John Shepley was buried on 31 August 1841 in Glossop (age 63 of Chunal).
Betty Harrison died on 17 July and was buried on 21 July 1868 at Top Chapel.
Generation Five.
Joseph Shepley was born on 27 July and baptised on 1 September 1804 in Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Glossop, Charlestown & Chunal, Cotton spinner. He married Betty Hampson, born on 6 January 1807, daughter of Thomas Hampson and Margaret (Peggy) Harrison (see The Ham(p)son family of Whitfield) on 27 February 1826 in Glossop and they had four children:
Joseph Shepley, born 23 July and baptised 10 October 1826 in Glossop Wesleyan Chapel.
Mary Shepley, baptised 18 May 1828 in Glossop.
Enoch Shepley, baptised 25 April 1831 in Glossop.
Charles Shepley, baptised 7 August 1833 in Glossop.
William Shepley was baptised on 31 May 1829 in Glossop Parish Church. 1841 census age given as 12. He married Elizabeth Bradbury, born about 1841 (daughter of Joseph Bradbury). They had a daughter, Sarah Ann Shepley, born in 1878, died 12 May and buried 15 May 1883 at Top Chapel.
