A Wood family of Whitfield.


Generation One.

John Wood of Whitfield was buried on 14 July 1729 in Glossop parish church yard. He and his wife Mary had four children:
     Edward Wood baptised 12 Jul 1708 in Glossop.
     Rebecca Wood, baptised 27 November 1710 in Glossop, buried 11 December 1721 in Glossop.
     Robert Wood baptised 2 December 1713.
     Nathan Wood baptised 20 September 1716.

Generation Two.

Robert Wood was baptised on 2 December 1713 in Glossop. In parish register entries he is described as of Whitfield & Whitfield Green. He married Alice Wood, daughter of John and Anna Wood (see box below), on 13 Jun 1745 in Peak Forest. Robert and Alice had four children:
     Nathan Wood baptised 20 January 1748 in Glossop.
     Mary Wood.
     Robert Wood.
     Ollive Wood, baptised 10 Sep 1756 in Glossop.
Alice was buried on 12 September 1758 in Glossop church yard. The register entry for her burial gives her age as 41.
Robert married Martha Heginbottam, daughter of Joseph and Margret Higginbotham, on 31 July 1759 in Glossop. Robert and Martha had one son, Joseph Wood born about 1761.
Robert Wood died on 12 October and was buried on 15 October 1789 in Glossop.
Martha died on 6 Mar and was buried on 9 March 1790 in Glossop. The parish register entry for her burial says she was aged 70, the widow of the late Robert Wood of Whitfield.

The family of John and Anna Wood.

John Wood of Whitfield and his wife Anna had four children:
     Anna Wood, baptised 30 May 1711 in Glossop.
     John Wood baptised 25 November 1713 in Glossop. Of Whitfield, he married Mary Knight on 9 November 1734 in Glossop. They had three children:
          Mary Wood baptised 24 February 1741 in Glossop. She had a son, John Wood baptised 15 December 1761 in Glossop.
          Ales Wood baptised 20 March 1743 in Glossop.
          John Wood, baptised 22 July 1746 in Glossop.
     Mary Wood, baptised 5 May 1716 in Glossop.
     Alice Wood baptised 6 May 1718 in Glossop. She married Robert Wood.

Nathan Wood was baptised on 20 September 1716 in Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield, Glossop & Harrop Chapel. He married Mary Thornton of Mottram on 24 November 1741 in Glossop and they had two children:
     William Wood who died on 11 December 1742.
     Rachel Wood baptised 3 March 1750 in Glossop.
Mary died on 4 February 1757 aged 35.
Nathan then married Mary Whitworth, daughter of William Whitworth and Mary Harrop (baptised 21 March 1735 in Mottram in Longdendale), on 17 January 1758 in Glossop. They had seven children:
     Sarah Wood baptised 4 March 1759.
     Mary Wood born about 1760.
     Nathan Wood baptised 15 September 1761.
     William Wood baptised 15 September 1761.
     Jonas Wood, buried 17 March 1771 in Glossop.

     John Wood.
Nathan Wood died on 28 September and was buried on 30 September 1787 in Glossop aged 71 and described as of Padfield. Another parish register entry records the burial of 'a child' on 12 Dec 1775.
The Glossop burial register has an entry which might be for Nathan's second wife - Mary Wood, widow, of Newton in Cheshire, buried 8 June 1798, age 63.

Children of Robert Wood.

Mary Wood, baptised 24 May 1752 in Glossop. She married Thomas Robinson (son of Samuel Robinson see box below) on 30 December 1780 in Glossop and they had three children:
     Hannah Robinson born 6 April and baptised 26 April 1784 in Glossop, died 2 May and buried 4 May 1784 in Glossop.
     Robert Robinson born 3 February and baptised 5 March 1786 in Glossop.
     Olive Robinson born 20 February and baptised 1 March 1789 in Glossop, died 6 March and buried 8 Mar 1789 in Glossop.
Thomas Robinson, who was described in parish register entries as of Whitfield and Glossop, was buried on 31 October 1816 in Glossop.

The family of Samuel Robinson.

Samuel Robinson, described in parish register entries as being of The Nook near Jumble and as of Whitfield, was buried on 7 July 1807 aged 74. He had three children:
     Robert Robinson baptised 22 May 1756 in Glossop.
     Thomas Robinson who was baptised on 8 November 1759 in Glossop and married Mary Wood.
     William Robinson baptised 6 May 1767 in Glossop. Of Whitfield & Lane End, he married Hannah Quarmby (daughter of Joseph Quarmby) on 8 May 1786 in Glossop. William and Hannah had 9 children:
          Sarah Robinson born 1 August and baptised 27 Aug 1786 in Glossop, buried 18 December 1802 in Glossop.
          James Robinson born 18 May and baptised 15 Jun 1788 in Glossop, buried 29 August 1847 in Glossop.

Joseph Wood was born about 1761. Parish register entries describe him as of Lane End, Whitfield. He married Hannah Fielding, daughter of Jeremy Fielding (see Descendants of Jeremy Fielding of Whitfield 1721), on 26 December 1784 in Glossop. They had nine children:

Sarah Wood was baptised on 4 March 1759 in Glossop. She married Joseph Goddard of Padfield (son of Joseph Goddard). They had one son, Donkin Goddard, born 20 March and baptised 15 May 1785 in Glossop.

Mary Wood was baptised on 10 February 1760 in Glossop. She married John Sydall, son of Phineas Syddall and Elizabeth Knott (see The Syddall family of Glossop).

Nathan Wood was baptised on 15 September 1761. Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield, Mattley in Mottram and Staleybridge. He married Martha Dearnely, daughter of William Dearnely, on 11 November 1784 in Glossop. They had eight children:

     William Wood born 31 March and baptised 24 May 1791 in Glossop, died of smallpox 22 April and buried 24 April 1792 in Glossop.

William Wood was baptised on 15 September 1761 in Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Padfield. He married Mary Mellor, daughter of William Mellor, on 14 February 1786 in Glossop and they had two children:
     Nathan Wood born 7 December 1788, baptised 15 March 1789 in Glossop.
     Zilpha Wood born 7 February and baptised 11 Feb 1791 in Glossop.

John Wood, described in the parish register as of Little Padfield, married Ann Kershaw (daughter of John and Grace Kershaw who had been baptised 12 May 1766 in Mottram in Longdendale). They had a son, Joseph Wood, born and baptised on 24 May 1784 in Glossop.

Generation Four.

Children of Robert Wood.

John Wood was born about 1781. He married Sarah Fielding, daughter of Charles Fielding and Ann Lomas (see Descendants of John Fielding of Whitfield 1674), on 5 February 1804 in Glossop. John and Sarah had ten children:
     Robert Wood born 7 July 1804.
     Charles Wood born 28 August 1806 in Whitfield, baptised 28 September 1806 in Glossop. He was living in Market Street, Glossop when his mother died.
     Joseph Wood born 18 October and baptised 4 December 1808 in Glossop.
     John Wood born 16 March 1811 in Whitfield, baptised 28 April 1811 in Glossop, died 24 January 1856 in Glossop. His will, written 9 January 1856, names his surving siblings and brothers in law.
     Betty Wood baptised 13 February 1814 in Glossop.
     Ann Wood baptised 3 September 1815 in Glossop.
     Abraham Wood born 27 January 1818 in Whitfield.
     Etty Wood baptised 10 Nov 1820 in Glossop.
     Mary Wood baptised 8 April 1823.
     Sarah Wood born 22 October 1826.
John Wood died on 22 December and was buried on 25 December 1846 in Whitfield. His will dated 12 August 1846, describes him as a Shoemaker of Howardtown.
At the time of the 1851 census Sarah was a widow living at 6 Shepley Mill (next door to Isaac & Sarah Hadfield) with John & Abraham. She died on 6 July 1863 at Shepley Mills and was buried on 9 July 1863 in Whitfield.

Betty Wood was born about 1785. She married Joseph Bramhall of Glossop (born about 1790) and they had ten children:
     John Bramhall born 21 May and baptised 2 July 1809 in Glossop, buried 5 February 1819 in Glossop.
     Hannah Bramhall born 20 February 1811.
     Edwin Bramhall born 2 April 1813, died 30 December 1848, buried in Glossop.
     Thomas Bramhall baptised 8 Jan 1815 in Glossop. A butcher, he died on 6 February 1873 in his 58th year and was buried in Glossop.
     Mary Bramhall baptised 2 March 1817 in Glossop, died 7 February 1880 aged 60, buried in Glossop.
     Betty Bramhall baptised 25 April 1819.
     Joshua Bramhall born in Glossop and baptised 2 February 1821 in Glossop. Died 27 January 1893 and buried in Whitfield. His MI describes him as of Pikes Lane. His wife, Sarah, was born about 1827 in Pately Bridge, Yorkshire. She died on 12 August 1897 aged 71 and was buried in Whitfield.
     Charlotte Bramhall baptised 1 February 1824 in Glossop.
     Maria Bramhall baptised 3 January 1826 in Glossop.
     Joseph Bramhall baptised 3 June 1828 in Glossop.
Joseph Bramhall died on 1 May 1854, aged 63 and was buried in Glossop.
At the time of the 1861 census Betty was aged 76, living at Market Cross, Old Glossop. Living with her was a granddaughter, Beth Bramhall, aged 8 (no indication of parentage).
Betty died on 3 May 1865, aged 79 and was buried in Glossop.

Thomas Wood was born on 19 August and baptised on 11 September 1798 in Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Whitfield, Little Moor and Pyegrove. He married Anne Sheppard, daughter of Henry Sheppard and Sarah Brunt (see The Sheppard family of Whitfield), on 25 February 1824 in Glossop Parish Church. Thomas and Anne had nine children:
     James Wood baptised 7 October 1825.

Children of John Wood.

Robert Wood was born on 7 July 1804 in Whitfield and baptised on 5 August 1804 in Glossop. He lived at Waterside then moved to Stalybridge. Robert married Sarah Goddard (born Mottram) on 25 December 1828 at Glossop parish church and they had ten children:
     John Wood born at Waterside, baptised 14 September 1829 in Glossop. Died 2 June 1868 and, buried at St Paul's, Stalybridge.
     Nelly (Ellen) Wood born about 1831.
     Mary Wood born about 1833 in Stalybridge, baptised in Glossop. Died 1 November 1905, buried at St Paul's, Stalybridge. She married someone named Reynolds.
     Ann Wood born about 1835 in Stalybridge, baptised in Glossop.
     James Wood born about 1837.
     Charles Wood born 6 May 1839 in Souracre, Stalybridge, baptised 18 September 1839 in Glossop, d. 2 Jul 1902 in Missouri. He married Mary Richardson, a widow.
     Betty Wood born in Stalybridge, baptised 19 September 1841 in Glossop, buried 3 July 1842 at St Paul's, Stalybridge.
     Martha Wood born about 1843.
     Robert Wood born in Stalybridge, baptised 26 April 1846 in Glossop. Died 21 January 1922 in Dukinfield, buried at St Paul's, Stalybridge. He married twice, wives named Ann and Mary Jane.
     Sarah Jane Wood born in Stalybridge, baptised 17 September 1848 in Glossop.
Robert Wood died on 6 July and was buried on 9 July 1881 at St Paul's, Stalybridge.
Sarah died 12 January 1880 and was buried at St Paul's, Stalybridge.

Charles Wood was born on 28 August 1806 in Whitfield and baptised 28 September 1806 in Glossop. He married Sarah Eyre (née Mellors), born about 1798 in Oldcote, Nottinghamshire. on 29 November 1835 in Glossop Parish Church. Sarah was the widow of John Eyre and had three children (Martha, George and Mary Eyre) when he died in 1828. Mary married Thomas Fielding, cousin of Charles Wood in 1849 (see Descendants of John Fielding of Whitfield 1674). The marriage immediately before that of Charles and Sarah was of Emma Fielding (Charles's aunt) and Robert Garlick. Charles witnessed that marriage and Robert Garlick witnessed the marriage of Charles and Sarah. They had one child:
     John Wood born in 1840.
Charles was a grocer, initially at 15 High Street West then, from 1860, at 25 High Street West, Glossop (London House), though the family was living at 6 Market Street by the time his mother died in 1863. Charles Wood retired in 1868 and son John Wood took over the business.
Charles Wood died on 30 March 1873. His will was proved by his son John Wood, grocer & corn dealer, High Street, and wife Sarah.
Sarah died in 1876 in Glossop, aged 79.

Mary Wood was baptised on 8 April 1823 in Glossop. She married John Armitage (born about 1821 in Huddersfield) and they had three children:
     Charles Armitage born about 1851 in Glossop.
     Alfred Armitage born about 1854 in Glossop. in the 1880 US census he was aged 26, a machinist living with his uncle Abraham's family in Massachusetts.
     John Armitage born about 1859 in Glossop.

Abraham Wood was born on 27 January 1818 in Whitfield and baptised on 8 March 1818 in Glossop. He married Hannah Nield, daughter of Mary Nield (see Nields of Chunal and Dinting), on 14 July 1863 at St James', Whitfield.
Together with Hannah's daughter, Elizabeth (born in 1845 at Green Vale and baptised on 11 May 1845 at Glossop Parish Church) they emigrated to America.
In the 1870 US census the family was living at North Andover, Essex, Massachusetts, Abraham being a weaver in a woolen mill.
Elizabeth married Daniel Maslen on 21 November 1875 in North Andover and they had a son, Abram James Maslen, on 26 December 1876. Elizabeth died on 20 february 1877.
In the 1880 US census Abraham and Hannah were living at North Andover, Essex, Massachusetts, Abraham being labourer. With them were their grandson, Abram Maslen, and nephew, Alfred Armitage.
Abraham Wood died on 2 July 1887 at North Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA aged 69 years 5 months 5 days.
Hannah died on 23 March 1893 at North Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA aged 70 years and 6 days.
Abraham and Hannah were buried at Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA.

Sarah Wood born 22 October 1826 in Whitfield, baptised 25 December 1826 in Glossop. She married Isaac Gee Hadfield, son of John Hadfield and Mary Gee (see A Hadfield family of Whitfield), on 4 October 1849 in Whitfield Parish Church.

Children of Betty Wood.

Hannah Bramhall was born 20 February and baptised 10 March 1811 in Glossop. She had a son, John Bramhall, who was baptised on 14 November 1833 in Glossop.

Betty Bramhall was baptised on 25 April 1819 in Glossop. She married Christopher Wagstaff Hadfield, son of Mary Hadfield, born 24 August and baptised 1 November 1801 in Glossop (see The descendants of James Goddard of Waterside).

Child of Thomas Wood.

James Wood was born in Whitfield and baptised 7 October 1825 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Martha Hampson, daughter of David Hampson and Hannah Dewsnap, baptised 13 January 1827 (see The Ham(p)son family of Whitfield). They had two children:
     Mary H Wood born about 1863 in Whitfield.
     David Henry Wood born about 1867.

Children of Robert Wood.

Nelly (Ellen) Wood was born about 1831 in Waterside. She married Benjamin Harrop (born about 1830 in Stalybridge) and they had four children:
     Ann Harrop born about 1859 in Stalybridge.
     Robert Harrop born about 1862 in Stalybridge.
     Mary E Harrop born about 1864 in Stalybridge.
     Esther Emma Harrop born about 1867 in Saddleworth.

James Wood was born about 1837 in Stalybridge. He married Sarah Ann Tinker, daughter of Robert Tinker and Ann Robinson (baptised 9 March 1834 in Ashton under Lyne), on 10 November 1861 in Ashton under Lyne. They had three children:
     Charles Wood born about 1863 in Stalybridge. He married Rachel Swift.
     Mary Ann Wood baptised 4 April 1867.
     Robert Wood born 27 April 1872.
Sarah Ann died on 5 July 1879 in Dukinfield and was buried at St Paul's, Stalybridge.
James subsequently married a second wife named Mary Ann.
James Wood died on 22 April 1902 in Stalybridge, and was at St Paul's, Stalybridge.

Martha Wood was born in Stalybridge and baptised on 17 September 1843 in Glossop. She married James Riley (born 26 April 1841 in Webster Hill, Dewsbury) on 1 March 1863 in Christ Church, Ashton under Lyne and they had five children:
     Hiram Riley born about 1864.
     William Scott Riley born about 1869 in Stalybridge, died 1894.
     Elizabeth Ann Riley born about1870 in Stalybridge.
     John Riley born about 1873 in Stalybridge.
     Reuben Riley born about 1875 in Stalybridge.
After James died Martha married Napoleon Pritchard, born about 1842 in Stalybridge son of Frederick Pritchard and Hannah Champin.

Child of Charles Wood

John Wood was born in 1840 in Glossop. He was a 24 year old grocer of 31 Lloyd Street, Greenheys, when he married Mary Nield, born in 1845 in Glossop, daughter of Joseph Nield and Alice Bates (see Nields of Chunal and Dinting), on 27 January 1864 in Manchester Cathedral. John and Mary had six identified children:
     Ruth Pickford Wood born 19 August 1864.
     Sarah Wood, born on 7 March 1866 in Glossop and baptised on 22 April in St James, Whitfield, died 13 May 1935 in Woods Hospital and buried on 16 May in Glossop Cemetery. Her home address when she died was Lonsdale, Spire Hollin. Probate was granted to John Dearnaley and William Ernest Statham.
     Alice Ann Wood, born in 1 April 1868 in Glossop and baptised on 10 May in St James, Whitfield. She died on 20 July 1915 in Lonsdale, Spire Hollin and was buried on 23 July in Glossop cemetery aged 47. Administration of her estate was granted to her sister Sarah.
     Charles Wood, born on 19 June 1871 in Glossop and baptised on 23 July in St James, Whitfield. He was buried on 9 June 1873 in Glossop cemetery aged 1 year 11 months.
     Annie Wood born 1 June 1873.
     Emma Wood, born 11 August 1874 in Glossop, baptised 29 July 1877 in Holy Trinity Dinting. She married William Ernest Statham, born 29 March 1876 in Glossop, in 1905 in Glossop. They were living in Levenshulme at the time of the 1911 census but subsequently moved to the family home at Lonsdale, Spire Hollin. William was an accountant who became a company director and secretary. Emma died on 3 July 1942 and was buried on 6 July in Glossop cemetery
Mary died aged 43 and was buried on 17 July 1888 in Glossop Cemetery
In 1893, John remarried to Sarah Ann Stafford (née Harrop), born in 1847 in Mellor. She was the widow, and second wife, of Joseph Middleton Stafford (Mayor of Glossop 1870-73, died 1891). Sarah Ann was a niece of Joseph's first wife Hannah and had worked for them as a domestic servant before Hannah died in 1882.
John Wood died suddenly, on 22 September 1904, in Blackpool and was buried on 26 September 1904 in Glossop cemetery aged 64. By that time the family home was Lonsdale, Spire Hollin. Administration of his estate was granted to his daughter Sarah Wood, spinster.
Sarah Ann died aged 85 and was buried on 24 May 1932 in Glossop Cemetery.

Child of James Wood.

David Henry Wood was born about 1867 in Whitfield. He married Fanny Elizabeth Hulley born about 1869 in Millers Dale, DBY, d. 5 February 1941 in 8 Hadfield Street, Whitfield, Glossop. They had eight children:
     David Wood born 20 October 1907.
     James Wood. Wife named Frances.
     Austin Wood.
     Martha Wood.
     Evelyn Wood. She married Frederick Cleaver.
     Amy Wood. She married Jack Taylor.
     Sally Wood.
     Leonard Wood.
Fanny died a widow on 5 February 1941 at 8 Hadfield Street, Whitfield.

Generation Seven.

Children of James Wood.

Robert Wood was born on 27 April 1872 in Dukinfield and emigrated to the USA in 1889. He married Betty Andrew, born 8 January 1875 in Ashton under Lyne (daughter of Henry Andrew and Sarah Bailey) on 21 January 1893 in Biddeford, Maine. Robert and Betty had a daughter, Emma Alice Wood, born 29 September 1893.
Robert Wood died on 2 July 1953 in Saylesville, Rhode Island, and was buried in Moshaasyck Cemetery, Central Falls, RI.
Betty died on 3 November 1962 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen, Essex.

Hiram Riley was born in 1864 in Stalybridge. He married Maria Henshall, born 1869 in Ashton under Lyne (daughter of John and Maria Henshall) on 22 July 1899 in the Register Office, Ashton under Lyne. They had seven children:
     Martha Alice Riley.
     Annie Riley.
     John Henshall Riley.
     William Scott Riley.
     Dora Riley.
     James Riley.
     Henry Riley.
Hiram Riley died on 24 February 1951 in Oldham.

Children of John Wood

Ruth Pickford Wood was born on 19 August 1864 in Glossop and baptised on 18 September in St James, Whitfield. In the 1881 census she was recorded as aged 16 at Matlock Bank as a boarder at Tor House Hydro. She married George Alfred Marcus, a solicitor born in 1849 in Portsea, Hampshire (son of John Marcus) on 8 August 1887 in St Peters Church, Paddington, Middlesex. They lived in Cheshire the moved to Basingstoke before Lewes. They had four children:
     Beatrice Mary Delamere Marcus, born 1888 in Glossop, baptised 28 March 1889 in St Peter's, Chester, buried 31 July 1901 in Glossop cemetery aged 13.
     Basil Gordon Wood Marcus, born 1889 in Glossop, baptised 16 December 1889 in St Peter's, Chester.
     Dorothy Violet Alice Marcus, born 1892 in Glossop, baptised 18 March 1892 in St Peter's, Chester, died 13 November 1938 in East Sussex County Mental Hospital, Hellingley. Her home address was 42 Leicester Road, Lewes when she died. Administration of her estate was granted to her niece Irene Winifred Cadwallader,.
     Alfred Ronald Coysh Marcus born 7 May 1893 in Glossop and baptised on 18 June 1893 in Holy Trinity, Dinting. He married Winifred Dimond, in 1917 in Lewes, and they had a daughter Irene Winifred Marcus, born on 6 October 1917. She married Roland Cadwallader in 1937 in Lewes and, died in 1977. Winifred died in 1926 and Alfred remarried to Beatrice May Taylor in 1934 in Brighton. Alfred (of 51 Cambrai Avenue, Chichester) died on 31 August 1935 in Royal West Sussex Hospital, Chichester. Administration of his estate was granted to Beatrice May Marcus, widow, and John Dearnaley, grocer.
George Marcus died in 1925 in Lewes, Sussex.
Ruth died on 29 February 1936 in Whickham House, King Henry's Road, Lewes. In the probate record she was described as of 42 Leicester Road, Lewes, widow, when she died. Probate of her will was granted to Dorothy Violet Alice Marcus, spinster

Annie Wood was born on 1 June 1873 in Glossop and baptised on 29 July 1877 in Holy Trinity, Dinting. She married Joseph Dearnaley, born 16 Oct 1876, in 1903 in Howardtown Wesleyan Chapel. They took over the grocery business at 25 High Street West after John Wood died but later moved to 2 Alexandra Villas, Talbot Road, where they were recorded in the 1939 register. They had two children:
     Thomas Dearnaley, born 1905 in Glossop, buried 22 December 1905 in Glossop cemetery aged 5 days.
     Annie Mildred Dearnaley, born 11 November 1909 in Glossop, baptised 26 December in the Wesley Chapel, Glossop. She married John William Redwood, a school teacher born 21 November 1911, on 9 August 1938 in Wesley Chapel, Glossop. At the time of the 1939 register they were living at 17 Glenthorne Road, Bexhill. Annie Mildred Redwood (of Garden Flat, The Bex de La Warr Parade, Bexhill on Sea) died on 10 June 1985. John William Redwood died in 1994.
Annie Dearnaley died aged 80 and was buried on 14 January 1954 in Glossop cemetery.
Joseph Dearnaley died aged 85, as a result of a road accident, and was buried on 7 November 1961 in Glossop Cemetery.

Children of David Henry Wood.

David Wood was born on 20 October 1907 in Glossop. He married Alice Higginbottom, born 4 February 1907 at 82 High St West, Glossop (daughter of John Matthew Higginbottom and Jane Newall) on 28 March 1932 in St James', Whitfield.
David Wood died 29 July 1971 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire.
Alice died 21 January 2000 in Park Riding Residential Home, Holmfirth.

Austin Wood. His wife was named Annie.

Martha Wood. She married Joseph Hurst.

Leonard Wood. His wife was named Irene.
