The Hadfield family of Cowbrook.


Generation One.

Joseph Hadfield (died 1761) and his wife Mary (died 1762) had a son also named Joseph Hadfield.

Generation Two.

Joseph Hadfield lived at Wash, Chapel en le Frith. He married Mary Robinson and they had nine identified children:
     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1755, died 1816.
     Charles Hadfield born about 1756.
     Joseph Hadfield born about 1760.
     James Hadfield, born about 1762, died 1765.
     John Hadfield, born about 1763, died 1801. Never married.
     William Hadfield, born about 1767.
     Mary Hadfield, born before 1771. She married ? Garside in 1792.
     Rachael Hadfield, born about 1771, died 1816.
     Christian Hadfield, born about 1775, died 1776.
Mary died in 1805 and Joseph Hadfield died in 1816.

Generation Three.

Charles Hadfield was born about 1756. He married Betty Swann, born about 1764. They had four identified children:
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1793, died 1797.
     Joseph Hadfield born about 1800.
     John Hadfield born about 1804.
     Mary Hadfield, born about 1809. She married J Hallam.
Betty died in 1829 and Charles Hadfield died in 1832.

Joseph Hadfield was born about 1760. He married Nancy Ibbotson, born about 1760. They had ten identified children:
     Sally Hadfield, born about 1786.
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1789, died 1799.
     Nancy Hadfield, born about 1791, died 1792.
     William Hadfield born about 1794.
     Samuel Hadfield, born about 1796.
     John Hadfield, born about 1799.
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1805.
     Nancy Hadfield, born about 1807.
     James Hadfield, born about 1808.
     Abraham Hadfield, born about 1813.
Nancy died in 1830 and Joseph Hadfield died in 1838.

William Hadfield was born about 1767. He built Cowbrook Mill after moving there from Padfield. The will of John Braddock of Padfield (made 18 June 1796) mentions his mill and house in Padfield in the possession of William Hadfield. He married Mary Collier, baptised 9 August 1767 in Dukinfield Old Chapel (Presbyterian), daughter of John Collier and Lydia Vaudrey (see Vaudrey-Collier connection) on 6 November 1791 in Glossop. They had ten identified children:
     Elizabeth Hadfield, born about 1791 in Chapel en le Frith, died 29 January and buried 3 February 1862. Listed at Sheffield Road in Whites 1857 directory. The 1861 census has her living at Cowbrook, aged 69, living on Interest of Money.
     Hannah Hadfield born 5 April 1793. She married Joseph Robinson, born 23 March and baptised on 25 April 1790 in Glossop, son of James Robinson and Ruth Collier (see Descendants of William Robinson of Marple and Dan Bank) on 14 February 1815 in Glossop.
     Mary Hadfield, born 26 July and baptised 28 August 1796 in Glossop, died 4 October and buried 7 October 1857.
     Sarah Hadfield born 21 January 1798.
     Joseph Hadfield born 15 April 1800.
     Millicent Hadfield born 12 April 1802.
     Ruth Hadfield, born in January 1806, baptised 29 January 1806 at Tintwistle Independent Chapel, buried 6 February 1806 in Glossop.
     John Hadfield born 2 April 1807.
     June Hadfield, born 25 June and baptised 30 July 1809 in Glossop.
     James Hadfield, born about 1810, died 19 April and buried 22 April 1832 in Old Glossop.
William Hadfield died on 22 June 1843 and Mary died on 23 April 1845. Both were buried at Old Glossop.

Generation Four.

Children of Charles Hadfield.

Joseph Hadfield was born about 1800, died 1845. He married Betty Jackson and they had seven identified children:

     Elizabeth Hadfield, born about 1824.

     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1827.

John Hadfield was born about 1804 in Chapel en le Frith. He married Ann Storer, born about 1805 in Chinley, and they had ten identified children:
     Charles Hadfield born about 1825.
     William Hadfield, born about 1827.
     Betty Hadfield born about 1829.
     James Hadfield, born about 1832, died 1858.
     John Hadfield, born about 1835.
     Thomas Hadfield, born about 1838.
     Grover Hadfield, born about 1841, died 1857.

     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1847.
     Samuel Hadfield, born about 1850 in Whitfield.
In the 1861 census John was aged 57, a stone getter at Whitfield Cross; Ann aged 55. Ann died in 1865 and John died in 1875.

Children of Joseph Hadfield.

William Hadfield was born about 1794 and became a farmer at Wash. He married Hannah Eyre, born about 1801. They had three identified children:
     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1827.
     Elizabeth Ann Hadfield, born about 1830.
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1832.
Both William and Hannah died in 1834.

Joseph Hadfield was born about 1805, died 1885. He moved to Hattersley. His wife Ellen was born about 1805, died 1891. They had three identified children:
     Nancy Hadfield born about 1839.
     Ann Hadfield, born about 1841, died 1843.
     Joseph Hadfield born about 1843.

James Hadfield was born about 1808, died 1867. His wife Martha was born about 1817, died 1872. They had four identified children:
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1840, died 1866.
     John Hadfield born about 1844.
     William Hadfield, born about 1848, died 1871.
     James Hadfield. Died aged 6.

Children of William Hadfield.

Hannah Hadfield was born on 5 April and baptised on 14 April 1793 in Chinley Independent. She married Joseph Robinson on 14 February 1815 in Glossop and they had nine identified children:
     William Robinson, baptised 14 April 1816 in Glossop.
     Serena Robinson, baptised 24 November 1817 in Glossop.
     James Robinson, baptised 7 May 1821 in Glossop.
     Robert Robinson, baptised 22 April 1823 in Glossop.
     John Robinson, baptised 23 October 1825 in Glossop.
     Sarah Robinson, baptised 18 April 1828 in Glossop.
     Elizabeth Robinson, baptised 25 April 1830 in Glossop.
     Ruth Robinson, baptised 15 June 1832 in Glossop.
     Mary Ann Robinson, baptised 27 July 1835 in Glossop.

Sarah Hadfield was born on 21 January and baptised on 4 April 1798 in Glossop. She married William Robinson, born 20 June 1796, son of James Robinson and Mary Bower (see The Robinsons of Gnat Hole) on 22 November 1818 in Glossop.

Joseph Hadfield was born on 15 April and baptised on 20 April 1800 in Glossop. He was a cotton spinner when Charles was born and an innkeeper when Samuel was born (kept the Hare & Hounds at Glossop). He married Harriet Harrison, born about 1800, on 30 November 1823 in Manchester Cathedral. They had two sons:
     Charles Hadfield born about 1824.
     Samuel Hadfield, baptised 2 June 1826 in Glossop, died 29 May 1827 in Glossop, buried in Old Glossop.
Harriet died on 18 November 1839 and Joseph Hadfield died on 19 August 1842. Both were buried at Old Glossop.

Millicent Hadfield was born on 12 April and baptised on 20 May 1802 in Glossop. She married John Bennett, baptised 2 October 1798 in Charlesworth Top Chapel, son of John Bennett and Sarah Bagshaw (see The Bennett family of Turnlee) on 7 July 1829 in Glossop.

John Hadfield was born on 2 April and baptised on 3 May 1807 in Glossop. He married Sarah Shepley, baptised on 3 July 1814 in Glossop, daughter of Joshua Shepley and Mary Bennett (see The Shepley family of Old Glossop and Brookfield) on 21 January 1836 in Glossop.
Sarah died, aged 23, on 18 August and was buried on 21 August 1837 at Littlemoor chapel. They had one son, Joshua Henry Hadfield, born about 1837 in Glossop, died 6 January 1901, buried in Glossop Cemetery.
John married Mary Ridgway, born 23 February 1817 in Glossop, daughter of Joseph Ridgway and Zipporah Robinson (see The Ridgways of Little Hayfield) on 14 July 1847 in Glossop Parish Church. They had six identified children:
     John Hadfield, born 16 April 1848 in Glossop, died 3 April 1888, a bachelor, in Wyehouse, Buxton. He was the black sheep of the family, apparently died of syphilis.
     Zipporah Ridgway Hadfield born 15 December 1849.
     Sarah Shepley Hadfield, born 23 January 1851 in Glossop. Continued to live at Cowbrook after her parents died.
     Mary Robinson Hadfield born 12 April 1852.
     Kate Collier Hadfield born 19 October 1853.
     Hester Vaudrey Hadfield born 14 April 1855.
John was one of Glossop's first councillors, being elected for All Saints ward in 1866. He died on 22 June 1876.
Mary died in 1885.

Generation Five.

Children of John Hadfield.

Charles Hadfield was born about 1825 in Chapel en le Frith. He lived at Lower Whitfield and married Mary Ann Marsland, baptised 25 December 1829 in Hayfield, daughter of Henry Marsland and Harriet Hall (see The descendants of William Marsland). They had nine identified children:
     Henry Hadfield born about 1851.
     Hannah Hadfield, born about 1854 in Glossop. She married (1) Joseph Nall (2) John Travis.
     Harriett Hadfield born about 1856.
     Mary Hadfield born about 1859.
     John Hadfield born about 1861.
     Elizabeth Hadfield, born about 1865. She married ? Walton before 1906.
     Charles Hadfield, born about 1869 in Glossop. Lived at Brook House, Little Hayfield.
     Two other children, William and Sarah, died in infancy and are buried at Whitfield.
Charles Hadfield died on 10 December 1907, buried in Whitfield.
Mary died, in her 80th year, on 1 April 1908 and was buried in Whitfield.

Betty Hadfield was born about 1829 in Chapel en le Frith. Her first husband was named Burgess and they had a son, Joe Burgess, born about 1855. In the 1861 census he is aged 6, recorded as Hadfield.
Betty remarried to John Hadfield, born about 1809 in Hayfield (son of Joseph Hadfield and Nancy Saxon). They had two sons:
     William Hadfield, born about 1860 in Glossop.
     Charles Hadfield born about 1862.
At the 1861 census John was a master cordwainer at Whitfield Cross.

Sarah Hadfield was born about 1843 in Chapel en le Frith. She married Joseph Hadfield, born about 1839 in Glossop (son of John Hadfield and Betty Goddard) in 1865. They had twelve identified children:
     George Hadfield, born about 1867.
     John Hadfield, born about 1868, died 1868.
     Betty Hadfield, born about 1870, died 1871.
     James Hadfield, born about 1872.
     Ann Hadfield, born about 1873.
     Samuel Hadfield, born about 1874, died 1878.
     Mary Hadfield, born about 1876, died 1892.
     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1878.
     Edith Ellen Hadfield, born about 1880, died 1880.
     Harriet Hadfield, born about 1882.
     James Marsden Hadfield, born about 1883, died 1925.
     Nancy Hadfield, born about 1885.
Joseph died in 1913 and Sarah died in 1914.

Children of Joseph Hadfield.

Nancy Hadfield was born about 1839 in Hattersley. She married Aaron Haughton, born 17 January 1842 in Godley, (son of Moses Haughton and Mary Wild). They had seven children:
     Mary Ellen Haughton, born about 1870 in Godley. She married ? Shatwell.
     Aaron Haughton, born about 1871 in Godley. Mayor of Hyde and a Justice of the Peace.
     Samuel Hadfield Haughton, born about 1872 in Godley, died 18 June 1937. Lived at 245 Mottram Road. Educated at Godley and Manchester Grammar School. He married Enid Holt.
     Squire Haughton, born about 1874, died 16 April 1875, buried at Gee Cross Unitarian Church.
     Ernest Albert Haughton, born about 1876 in Godley.
     John Haughton, born 5 April 1879, died 6 April 1879, buried at Gee Cross Unitarian Church.
     Anne Haughton, born 8 April 1880, died 9 April 1880, buried at Gee Cross Unitarian Church.
The family was at Sheffield Road (Polygon Houses) Godley in the 1881 census. Aaron was a way-warden and churchwarden at St John's, Godley; prominent in politics and the church in Godley & Hyde.
Aaron died on 27 January 1903. Both he and Nancy were buried at Gee Cross Unitarian Church.

Joseph Hadfield was, born about 1843 in Hattersley, died 1920, buried in Chapel en le Frith. He was vicar of Hadfield and Rural Dean of Glossop. He married Mary Bradshaw, born about 1844. They had three children:
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1869, died 1947. Medical Officer of Health for Glossop. He married Euphemia Donaldson on 5 February 1926, died 1945.
     Ellen (Nellie) Hadfield. She married Arthur Walker.
     William Bruce Hadfield, born 12 April 1884 in Glossop, buried 12 April 1952. He married Anne Thornley on 8 June 1915, died 1964.
Mary died in 1899. Joseph Hadfield died in 1920 and was buried in Chapel en le Frith.

Child of James Hadfield.

John Hadfield was born about 1844, died 1909. His wife's name was Martha and they had two daughters:
     Martha Ann Hadfield, born about 1875, died 1900.
     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1878, died 1878.

Children of Joseph Hadfield.

Charles Hadfield was baptised on 25 November 1824 in Glossop. He took over the Hare & Hounds in 1848 his father and was also a farmer, at Hall Street, Glossop. He married Betty Rothwell, born about 1822 in Leigh, Lancashire. They had seven identified children:
     Joseph Hadfield, born about 1847 in Glossop, died 1891.
     James Hadfield born about 1849.
     Samuel Hadfield, born about 1852 in Glossop.
     Harriett Hadfield, born about 1854.
     Elizabeth Hadfield, born about 1857/8 in Glossop.
     Richard Hadfield, born about 1859 in Glossop.
     Rebecca Rothwell Hadfield, born about 1861/2, died 3 April 1862.
Betty died on 24 June 1861 and was buried in Old Glossop.
Charles Hadfield remarried to Ann Higginbottom and took over the Station Hotel, Norfolk Street. He moved, with some of his children, to 38 Norfolk Street after he gave up the licence of the Station Hotel in 1867. He died on 28 April 1877 and was buried in Old Glossop.

Children of John Hadfield.

Zipporah Ridgway Hadfield was born on 15 December 1849 in Glossop. She married Thomas Bennett, born 18 May 1838 in Glossop, baptised 1 July 1838 in Hayfield, son of John and Mary Bennett (see The Bennett family of Simmondley and Birch Vale) on 4 September 1872 in Glossop.

Mary Robinson Hadfield was born on 12 April 1852 in Glossop. She married James Humphreys, born about 1853 in Alexandrew, Dunbarton, Scotland. They had two children:
     Mary Hadfield Humphreys. She married her cousin Philip Ridgway Bennett (see The Bennett family of Simmondley and Birch Vale).
     Hester Vaudrey Humphreys. She married George Sugden.

Kate Collier Hadfield was born on 19 October 1853. She married William Platt, born about 1848, son of Edward Platt and Fanny Garlick (see The Platt family of Glossop).

Hester Vaudrey Hadfield was born on 14 April 1855. Her first marriage was to Arthur Bennett, born about 1854 in Beard, son of John and Mary Bennett (see The Bennett family of Simmondley and Birch Vale).

Generation Six.

Children of Charles Hadfield.

Henry Hadfield was, born about 1851 in Whitfield, died 1912. He farmed Flatt Farm at Whitfield and was Mayor of Glossop in 1908/09. He married Mary Edwards, born about 1854 in Pentre near Chirk, Wales. They had seven children:
     Sarah Hadfield, born about 1874 in Whitfield, died 1914. Never married.
     Mary Hadfield, born about 1875. She married Ernest Hampson of Hoecroft Farm, Whitfield. No issue.
     Harriett Ellen Hadfield, born about 1876 in Whitfield, died 1948. She married John Herbert Beard. No issue.
     Albert Hadfield born about 1878.
     John Charles Hadfield born about 1888.
     Henry Marsland Hadfield born about 1890.
     Margaret Hadfield, born about 1895. She married Wilfred Bradley, who was killed in WWI. She then married Thornton Heap, born 1894, died 1997. They ran a well known newsagent's shop in High Street West, Glossop before retiring to Blackpool.
Henry Hadfield died in 1912 and Mary in 1832.

Harriett Hadfield was born about 1856 in Hayfield. She married Joseph Hadfield, born about 1858, son of Christopher Hadfield and Hannah Bennett (see The descendants of James Goddard of Waterside).

Mary Hadfield was born about 1859. She married William Goddard, born about 1862, died 1937. They had eight identified children:
     Lucy Goddard.
     Annie Goddard, born about 1884. She married Thomas French.
     William Hadfield Goddard born about 1886.
     Mary Elizabeth Goddard born about 1888.
     Emma Goddard, born about 1891. She married James Wilde.
     Charles Goddard.
     Stephen Goddard.
     Beatrice Goddard.

John Hadfield was, born about 1861 in Glossop, died 1936. Lived at Hague Street, Glossop. He married Eliza Bentley, born about 1861, died 1933. They had four identified children:
     Rachel Hadfield. She married Joseph Howard.
     Charles Hadfield, born 1887.
     Eliza Hadfield born 1889. She married Percy Fielding.
     Lydia Hadfield born 1891. She married Samuel Hadfield Gregory.

Child of Betty Hadfield.

Charles Hadfield was born about 1862, died 1937. He married Lydia Ann Littlewood, born about 1866, died 1941. They had four identified children:
     John Hadfield. He married (1) Clare Walker. He married (2) Hannah Walker.
     Annie Hadfield born about 1893. She married Frank Storah.
     Ada Hadfield born about 1898. She married James Carr.
     Emma Hadfield born about 1903. She married Stanley Johnson Gray.

Child of Charles Hadfield.

James Hadfield was born about 1849 in Glossop, died 1932. The family was at 58 Arundel Street in 1881 census. He married Annie Armstrong, born about 1853 in Sheffield, died 1905, married in 1875. They had two daughters:
     Ada Hadfield, born about 1874, died 1947.
     Marion Hadfield, born about 1877.

Generation Seven.

Children of Henry Hadfield.

Albert Hadfield, born about 1878 in Whitfield, died 1952. He married Sarah Ellen Jones, born in Wales. They had four identified children:
     Margery Hadfield born about 1913.
     Marion Hadfield.
     Marjorie Hadfield.
     Henry Hadfield, born about 1925.

John Charles Hadfield, born about 1888, died 1953. He married Edith Anne Kelsall in New Mills. They had three identified children:
     Mary Hadfield born about 1915.
     Alice Hadfield born about 1915.
     William Toman Hadfield born August 1920.

Henry Marsland Hadfield, born about 1890, died 1975. He married Beatrice Garside, born about 1892, died 1962, in Glossop Parish Church. They had a son, Harry Hadfield, born about 1918.

Children of Mary Hadfield.

Lucy Goddard. She married Edgar Booth. They had five children: Edgar Granville (1918-1945), Margery, Connie, Jeff and Dennis Booth.

William Hadfield Goddard, born about 1886. He married Gertrude Hodson, born 2 April 1883, died 1 May 1945. They had three children:
     Elsie Goddard, born 3 August 1915. She married Thomas Barton.
     Joseph Goddard.
     Philip Goddard.

Mary Elizabeth Goddard, born about 1888. She married Fred Ainsworth. They had two children: Hylda and Fred Ainsworth.

Charles Goddard. He married Annie Turner. They had three children: James, Frank and Maurice Goddard.

Stephen Goddard. He married Alice Winterbottom. They had two sons: Stephen and William Goddard.

Beatrice Goddard. She married P Walsh. They had five children: Mary, Ann, Bernard, Peter and Catherine Walsh.
