The Howards of Ludworth and Bridgefield.


Generation One.

John Howard of Clough End in Ludworth, farmer, had six children:
     Lettice Howard born about 1774.
     Betty Howard. She married John Hammond Swindels. Her father's will said she had a child who was lame and infirm.
     Hannah Howard. She married Joseph Penny.
     Joseph Howard.
     Bernard Howard.
     Mary Howard. She married William Smith.
John Howard died on 9 December 1825.

Generation Two.

Lettice Howard was born about 1774. She married John Garlick on 30 October 1794 in Glossop and they had four children:
     Salley Garlick, baptised 1796 in Top Chapel Charlesworth.
     Thomas Garlick born 27 January 1798.
     John Garlick born 6 December 1800, baptised 7 Feb 1801 in Top Chapel Charlesworth.
     Joseph Garlick, born 12 June and baptised 22 June 1803 in Top Chapel Charlesworth, baptised 25 May 1817 in Glossop (mother Lettice Garlick, widow).
John Garlick died before 25 May 1817 as Lettice is described as a widow in baptism the entry for Joseph.
Lettice died aged 81 of Dinting and was buried on 25 December 1855 at Charlesworth Top Chapel.

Joseph Howard of Bridge Field, Glossop. Worked Bridgefield Mill. He married Mary Wardlow, daughter of William Wardlow and Jenny Hadkin (see The Wardlow family of Charlesworth and Bridgefield) on 14 June 1810 in Glossop. They had three children:
     Thomas Howard, born 17 January 1812, baptised 22 June 1817 in Glossop.
     William Wardlow Howard, born 7 July and baptised 20 July 1814 in Littlemoor Chapel, baptised 22 June 1817 in Glossop Parish Church, died 1879. He became a doctor. William married Mary Ann Bennett, born 12 August 1821, daughter of John and Alice Bennett (see The Bennett family of Turnlee) on 3 January 1850 in Littlemoor Independent Chapel.
     John Howard, born 21 October 1815.

Bernard Howard of Clough End, farmer died on 29 April 1850. He had a son named John Howard.

Generation Three.

Child of Lettice Howard.

Thomas Garlick was born on 27 January 1798 and baptised on 25 May 1817 in Glossop (mother Lettice Garlick, widow). He married Emma Garlick, born about 1803, daughter of John Garlick and Mary Shepley (see The Garlick family of Pikes and The Junction) on 30 April 1829 in Glossop Parish Church.

Child of Joseph Howard.

John Howard was born on 21 October 1815 and baptised on 22 June 1817 in Glossop. He married Harriet Sykes of Wren Nest, born 1823, daughter of Jerry Sykes and Sarah Sydall (see The Syddall family of Glossop) on 26 Feb 1844 in Glossop. John was described as a cotton spinner of Bridge Field in the marriage entry. They had three children:
     Josiah Sykes Howard, born 1844.
     Mary Howard, born 1847.
     Edward Howard, born 1849.
John Howard built the Grapes Inn in 1845. He is recorded there, aged 35, as a beer house keeper in the census of 1851.
