Dewsnap family of Hargate Hill and Simmondley.


Generation One.

Samuel Dewsnap of Hargate Hill was born about 1774. He married Hannah Hill, also born about 1774, on 24 November 1795 in Glossop. They had ten children:
     Moses Dewsnap born 4 April 1796.
     William Dewsnap baptised 10 April 1798.
     Samuel Dewsnap born 26 March 1800.
     James Dewsnap born 7 February 1802.
     John Dewsnap born 1 May 1804.
     Thomas Dewsnap, born 25 February and baptised 28 April 1807 at Top Chapel.
     Hannah Dewsnap born 21 March 1809.
     Mary Dewsnap, baptised 28 February 1816 in Glossop.
     Martha Dewsnap, born 1 May 1816.
     Betty Dewsnap, baptised 6 May 1818 in Glossop.
Samuel Dewsnap died in 1842 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 68.
Hannah died on 23 March and was buried on 25 March 1851 at Top Chapel.

Generation Two.

Moses Dewsnap was born on 4 April and baptised on 18 July 1796 at Top Chapel. Of Hargate Hill & Simmondley, a labourer & innkeeper, he was licensee of the Hare & Hounds, Simmondley from 1837 until his death in 1859. He married Mary (Mally) Booth, born about 1802, daughter of Abraham Booth and Betty Harrop (see A Booth Family of Simmondley (Hare & Hounds)), on 6 January 1829 in Glossop. They had five children:
     John Dewsnap born 25 April 1829.
     William Dewsnap born 24 September 1830.
     Ruth Dewsnap, born 21 September and baptised 28 December 1832 at Top Chapel, died 8 April 1833 and buried at Top Chapel aged 7 months.
     Samuel Dewsnap, born 7 May 1835, baptised 12 January 1836 at Top Chapel, died 29 January 1904 and buried at Top Chapel aged 68. He took over the Hare & Hounds from the death of his father until he, himself, died in 1904. Samuel kept many racing dogs including a celebrated dog called Mounter.
     Betty Dewsnap, born 25 March and baptised 29 August 1837 at Top Chapel, died 3 February 1839 and buried at Top Chapel aged 1 year and 10 months.
Moses Dewsnap died on 26 May and was buried on 30 May 1859 at Top Chapel aged 63.
Mary died on 4 August 1872 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 70.

William Dewsnap was baptised on 10 April 1798 at Top Chapel and became a spinner living at Hargate Hill and Ashton under Lyne. He married Hannah Stafford, born about 1800, on 1 March 1824 in Glossop and they had five children:
     Mary Ann Dewsnap, born 10 December 1827, baptised 14 February 1828 at Top Chapel, died 19 May 1834, buried at Top Chapel aged 6.
     Ellen/Helen Dewsnap, born 2 May and baptised 20 June 1830 at Top Chapel, died 2 September 1831, buried at Top Chapel aged 1.
     Edwin Dewsnap, born 24 October and baptised 25 December 1832 at Top Chapel, died 15 April 1837, buried at Top Chapel aged 4 years and 6 months.
     Hannah Dewsnap, born 2 April and baptised 19 May 1836 at Top Chapel, died 10 May 1837, buried at Top Chapel aged 13 months.
     Elizabeth Ann Dewsnap, born 27 March 1838, died 16 June 1842, buried at Top Chapel aged 4 years and 3 months.
William Dewsnap died on 2 August and was buried on 4 August 1855 at Top Chapel, aged 58 of Ashton under Lyne.
Hannah died on 3 April 1864 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 64.

Samuel Dewsnap was born on 26 March and baptised on 2 June 1800 at Top Chapel. A hatter, he married Mary Shepherd, born about 1798, on 5 May 1830 at Glossop. They had five children:
     James Dewsnap, born 19 June and baptised 14 November 1830 in Glossop, died 7 October 1873, buried at Top Chapel aged 43 of Woolley Lane (Hadfield).
     Samuel Dewsnap, born 23 February and baptised 2 July 1832 at Top Chapel.
     Mary Dewsnap, born 26 September 1833, baptised 16 April 1835 at Top Chapel, died 6 May 1835, buried at Top Chapel aged 1 year 8 months.
     John Dewsnap, born 19 January and baptised 19 April 1836 at Top Chapel.
     Jean Dewsnap, born 27 January and baptised 7 May 1838 at Top Chapel.
Samuel Dewsnap died on 23 March 1863 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 62.
Mary died on 1 August 1873 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 75.

James Dewsnap was born on 7 February and baptised on 11 April 1802 at Top Chapel. A spinner of Hargate Hill and Ashton under Lyne, he married Mary Hallows, born 22 October 1805, on 2 May 1825 in Glossop. They had seven children:
     Hannah Dewsnap, born 3 July and baptised 11 September 1825 at Top Chapel, died 13 May 1874, buried at Top Chapel aged 47.
     Ann Dewsnap, born 5 January and baptised 25 March 1827 at Top Chapel, died 12 January 1869, buried at Top Chapel aged 42.
     Mary Dewsnap, born 24 September and baptised 2 November 1828 at Top Chapel, died 10 November 1828, buried at Top Chapel aged 1 month.
     Elizabeth Dewsnap born 23 April 1830.
     Mary Dewsnap, born 9 April and baptised 19 May 1833 at Top Chapel, died 21 December 1856, buried at Top Chapel aged 23.
     Jane Dewsnap, born 8 May and baptised 14 June 1835 at Top Chapel, died 28 June 1864, buried at Top Chapel aged 29.
     Ebenezer Dewsnap, born 29 September and baptised 12 November 1837 at Top Chapel.
Mary died 8 November 1843 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 38.
James Dewsnap died on 10 March 1867 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 65, of Crowthorn.

John Dewsnap was born 1 May and baptised 31 July 1804 at Top Chapel. Of Hargate Hill, a carrier, he married Jane Adamson on 17 January 1832 in Glossop. They had two children:
     Marget Dewsnap, born 4 November and baptised 24 December 1832 at Top Chapel.
     John Dewsnap, born 6 February and baptised 22 March 1835 at Top Chapel.

Hannah Dewsnap was born on 21 March and baptised on 7 August 1809 Top Chapel. She had a daughter, Mary Dewsnap, born 13 February and baptised 24 June 1829 at Top Chapel.
Hannah married John Neal, of Brookfield, labourer (son of Thomas and Ann Neal) , on 1 September 1834 in Glossop Parish Church (see Neal family of Gamesley and Brookfield).

Martha Dewsnap was born on 1 May and baptised on 15 August 1811 at Top Chapel. She married Robert Dewsnap, baptised on 11 December 1817 in Glossop, son of John Shaw and Betty Dewsnap (see Dewsnap family of Glossop), on 11 December 1837 at Oldham parish church.

Generation Three.

Children of Moses Dewsnap.

John Dewsnap was born on 23 April and baptised on 16 July 1829 at Top Chapel. A stone mason of Simmondley, he married Elizabeth Wilson, born about 1832. They had four identified children:
     Emma Dewsnap, born about 1853.
     Mary Jane Dewsnap, born about 1855.
     Abraham Dewsnap born about 1856.
     George Dewsnap born about 1860. Became licensee of the Hare and Hounds 1904-1911 after his uncle Samuel died,
In the 1861 census the family is recorded living next to John Dewsnap, Blacksmith (see Dewsnap family of Hadfield).
John Dewsnap died aged 32 on 29 August 1861 and was buried at Top Chapel.
Elizabeth died on 3 October 1877, in her 46th year, and was buried at Top Chapel.

William Dewsnap was born on 24 September 1830, baptised 19 May 1831 at Top Chapel. He married Ruth Jackson, born about 1830 and they had two identified children:
     Sarah Ann Dewsnap born in 1851.
     Ellen Dewsnap, born in 1862, died 29 May 1882 and buried at Top Chapel aged 19.
William Dewsnap died on 10 February 1863 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 31.
Ruth died on 10 February 1917 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 87.

Child of James Dewsnap.

Elizabeth Dewsnap was born 23 April and baptised 20 June 1830 at Top Chapel. She married her cousin Samuel Neal (see Neal family of Gamesley and Brookfield) in 1862.

Generation Four.

Children of John Dewsnap.

Abraham Dewsnap was born about 1856. Of Simmondley and then Pikes Lane, Glossop, he married Elizabeth Sarah Cooper, born about 1855. They had one identified child, Fanny Dewsnap, born about 1891, died 30 August 1898, buried at Top Chapel aged 7.
Abraham Dewsnap died on 19 November 1890 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 34.
Elizabeth died on 2 November 1925, and was buried at Top Chapel aged 70.

George Dewsnap was born about 1860. Of Charlestown, he married Margaret Ann Lee, born about 1861. They had one identified child, Lilian Dewsnap, born about 1888, died 30 April 1940, buried at Top Chapel aged 52.
George Dewsnap died on 26 March 1931 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 71.
Margaret died on 15 August 1937 and was buried at Top Chapel aged 76.
