Eileen Hawker was the adopted niece of Mary Ann Farmer, though not legally adopted.
Dated 18th June 1959
STATUTORY DECLARATION by MISS M. FARMER
A Fraser Taylor & Son, 59 Church Road, Hove.
I, MARY ANN FARMER of 1 Rose Cottages Cackle Street Horney Common Uckfield in the County of Sussex Spinster Solemnly and Sincerely Declare as follows:-
1. When at school at Spark Brook Birmingham with my friend Ada Baker in 1893 we exchanged mutual promises that the survivor of us would look after the child of whoever of us died first should the child be left without a father or other near relative.
2. Ada Baker came to live in Leyton towards the end of 1919 under the name of Hawker being then pregnant. I was then living at Dawlish, Devon.
3. On the 14th January 1920 as I was later informed her child was born. She died shortly afterwards and while she was dying asked that her daughter should be called Eileen and should be given to me. I was told that the mother died about six months later.
4. As I could not be traced the child was placed in a Children's Home.
5. About nine months later the Home found my address and wrote to ask me if I would take care of Eileen, I agreed and she was brought to me by one of the staff from the home who told me that Ada Baker had married a Canadian soldier called Hawker in 1918 and had lived with him in Canada where he had died and that having no means of support she immediately returned to England.
6. I did not enquire if Eileen's birth had been registered or whether she had been baptised but she has lived with me ever since and has always been known as my adopted niece but I have not adopted her legally.
7. Owing to what I had been told, I gave her the surname Hawker.
8. I verily believe Eileen Hawker to be the lawful child of Ada Hawker (nee Baker) and to have been born at Leyton on the 14th day of January 1920.
AND I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the Statutory Declarations Act 1835.
