In the 1881 census, William is a cotton commission agent. He and Fred were staying with his parents. The only Sarah Hadfield of the right age in Glossop at the 1881 census was staying with the family of John Wood at 25 High St West, Glossop (described as niece). The family was living at 37 King Street in 1885 when William was granted admon of his father's estate.
In the 1891 census William, aged 39 and a cotton weaver, was lodging at 6a Charlestown Road, Whitfield. With him were Isaac a Finisher aged 14, Fred a Cotton Bander aged 12, Sam aged 8 and Tom aged 6. The head of the household was a widowed cotton weaver named Elizabeth Hadfield whose age is given as 31.
William, Fred, Sam and Tom were living at 70 Kershaw Street at the time of the 1901 census and 54 Gladstone Street, at the time of the 1911 census.
William was living at "Moorland View", Sheffield-road, Glossop when he died on 18 February 1917. Probate was granted at Derby on 6 March 1917 to Isaac Hadfield labourer and Fred Hadfield calendarman. Effects 2808 7s. 9d.

He was killed in action 9 April 1917, a private (number 148009) in the 78th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Canadian Army Service records provide the information that he enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on 2 August, 1915 stating his occupation as a railwayman, and his next of kin as his father, William Hadfield, of 73, High Street East, Glossop. He had previously served with the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers. He was five feet three inches in height, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair, and he belonged to the Church of England. He is Commemorated on the Vimy Memorial and the War Memorial at Whitfield Church.

119-123 High Street East was built by Benjamin Platt - shop with houses either side and the corn chamber above. They used to deliver corn to farms up the Snake.

Occupied Warth Mill (later Knott's Mill) from 1812. According to the rate books in 1833 he was assessed for 3,648 spindles.
Built nos. 2-8 Whitfield Cross in 1849.
1861 census - age 64, cotton mill manager at High Street Cottage.
Managed Wren Nest Mill where he was known as "Old Billy". On the 17th of August, 1867, William Robinson was presented with a gold watch by the workpeople at Wren Nest Mills, he having been the manager for 25 years. His wife was presented with a silver teapot. The presentation took place in the Primitive Methodist Schoolroom, and there were 800 persons present.
