The Syddall family of Glossop.
There are various spellings of the surname - "i" and "y" interchangeable, one or two "d"s and one or two "l"s. Many members of the family had their name spelled in different ways in different parish register entries.
Generation One.
Phineas Syddall was born about 1703. His wife Sarah was born about 1716. They had ten children:
     Grace Syddall.
     Phineas Syddall baptised 28 February 1736.
     Joseph Siddall.
     Benjamin Syddall born about 1745.
     James Siddall baptised 18 April 1748.
     John Syddall, baptised 28 September 1750 in Tintwistle Independent.
     Sally Syddall, baptised 11 April 1753 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Martha Thornely Syddall baptised 24 December 1755.
     George Syddall baptised 15 October 1758.
     Samuel Syddall, baptised 20 September 1760 in Parish Church, Glossop. May have died as an infant.
Phineas Syddall died on 5 October and was buried on 7 October 1791 at Parish Church, Glossop. The parish register says that he died of "a decay of nature" and that he was aged 88.
Sarah died, aged 82, on 19 April 1798 and was buried at the Parish Church, Glossop.
Generation Two.
Grace Syddall married George Knott, born about 1733, a clothier of Padfield, on 4 December 1755 in Glossop. They had a daughter, Martha Knott, baptised 27 October 1757 in Glossop. She married John Nield, born about 1764, son of John Nield (see Nields of Whitfield and Hadfield), on 18 January 1785 in Glossop.
Grace died on 17 Feb 1764 and was buried in Glossop.
George Knott died on 8 October 1779 and was buried in Glossop aged 46.
Phineas Syddall was baptised on 28 February 1736 in Gee Cross Unitarian Chapel, Hyde. Some Glossop parish register entries describe him as "Jr". He married Elizabeth Knott, born about 1738, on 17 September 1758 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had four children:
     Sarah Syddall, baptised 5 January 1759 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Mary Syddall, baptised 27 March 1760 in Mottram in Longdendale.
     John Sydall born about 1762.
     Samuel Siddal born about 1764.
Phineas Syddall of Padfield died aged 48 on 19 July and was buried on 21 July 1784 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Elizabeth died on 17 January and was buried on 19 January 1792 in Parish Church, Glossop. The parish register entry for her burial describes her as "Betty, Widow of Phineas Syddall Jr of Padfield", aged 55, and says she died "of a Diabetes".
Joseph Siddall married Hannah Garlick on 23 December 1762 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had three children:
     Joseph Siddall born about 1766.
     John Syddall.
     Martha Syddall.
Benjamin Syddall was born about 1745. Parish register entries describe him as being of Padfield, Hilltop and Betten Hill. He married Betty Garlick, baptised 20 February 1747, daughter of John Garlick (see The Garlick family of Padfield) on 28 March 1769 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had six children:

     Mary Syddall, born 30 September and baptised 2 November 1783 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Benjamin Syddall was buried, aged 76, on 26 August 1821 in Parish Church, Glossop.
James Siddall was baptised on 18 April 1748 in Tintwistle Independent. Parish register entries describe him as of Glossop & Manchester. He married Sarah Dewsnapp on 9 January 1774 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had one son, Phineas Siddall, born about 1786, died aged 26 on 22 June 1812, buried 25 June 1812 in Parish Church, Glossop.
James Siddall died, aged 69, on 16 November and was buried on 20 November 1816 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Martha Thornely Syddall was baptised on 24 December 1755 in Parish Church, Glossop. She married Samuel Garlick, baptised 25 January 1754, son of John Garlick (see The Garlick family of Padfield) on 13 July 1777 in Glossop.
George Syddall was baptised on 15 October 1758 in Parish Church, Glossop. He married Mary Hadfield, baptised 8 May 1768 in Parish Church, Glossop (daughter of Thomas Hadfield and Betty Garside) on 15 September 1789 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had seven children:

     Jane Syddall, born about 1797.

George Syddall was buried, aged 76, on 24 February 1835 in Parish Church, Glossop.

John Sydall of Padfield was born about 1762. He married Mary Wood, baptised 10 February 1760, daughter of Nathan Wood and Mary Whitworth (see A Wood family of Whitfield) in 1778. They had seven children:
     Elizabeth Sydall, born and baptised 4 February 1782 in Parish Church, Glossop, died 21 February and buried 23 February 1782 at Parish Church, Glossop.
     John Sydall born 4 January 1783.
     Phineas Sydall, born about 1787, buried, aged 16, on 6 April 1803 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Elizabeth Sydall, born 20 June and baptised 21 July 1788 in Glossop.
     Sally Sydall, born 5 December and baptised 16 December 1790 in Glossop.
     Mary Sydall, born 27 November 1795, baptised 5 January 1796 in Glossop.
     Joseph Sydall, born 24 January and baptised 11 February 1798 in Parish Church, Glossop, buried 1 March 1799 in Parish Church, Glossop. Parish register entry for his burial says he was aged 1, the son of Widow Sydall of Padfield.
John Sydall was buried, aged 36, on 19 February 1798 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Mary died about 1849.
Samuel Siddal of Padfield was born about 1764. He married Jenny Wood, born about 1766 (see Wood family of High Stone and Woodhead) on 13 January 1788 in Mottram in Longdendale. They had three children:
     James Siddall, died, an infant, on 7 May and was buried on 10 May 1789 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Sally Siddal, born 8 March and baptised 28 March 1790 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     John Syddall, born 13 February and baptised 16 February 1792 in Parish Church, Glossop, died 24 February and buried 26 February 1792 at Parish Church, Glossop.
Jenny died, aged 28, on 15 June and was buried on 17 June 1794 at Parish Church, Glossop.

Joseph Siddall was born about 1766. He married Martha Chorton, born about 1760 (daughter of John Chorton) on 21 January 1783 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had eight children:

John Syddall of Padfield married Sarah Marshall (daughter of Thomas Marshall) on 21 August 1791 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had a daughter, Betty Syddall, born 7 December 1791, baptised 7 January 1792 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Martha Syddall married George Knott (son of Jonathan Knott) on 20 November 1791 in Parish Church, Glossop. Parish register entries describe George as of Padfield & Glossop. They had seven children:

He married Ellen Tatton, born about 1769, on 1 January 1790 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had ten children:
     John Sidall, born 25 February and baptised 3 April 1791 in Parish Church, Glossop, buried 22 July 1835 at Parish Church, Glossop, aged 44 and of Wren Nest.

John Sydall was born on 4 January and baptised on 7 February 1783 in Parish Church, Glossop. He and his wife Mary had four children:
     Simpson Sydall, baptised 14 April 1816 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     John Sydall baptised 20 December 1818.
     Martha Sydall, baptised 5 April and buried 6 April 1821 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Joseph Sydall, baptised 10 June 1822 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Mary died on 10 October 1824 and was buried at Parish Church, Glossop.
John Sydall of Padfield died on 7 July 1855 and was buried at Parish Church, Glossop.

Elizabeth Sydall was born on 3 February and baptised on 31 March 1795 in Tintwistle Independent. She married John Platt, born 12 December 1797 in Glossop, son of John Platt and Mary Hinchcliffe (see The Platt family of Glossop) on 26 May 1822 in Glossop.
James Sydall was born on 3 November and baptised on18 December 1796 in Parish Church, Glossop. He had a daughter, Ann Sydall, born about 1826. In the 1881 census he was a retired labourer living with Ann's family.
Sarah Sydall was born on 16 July and baptised on 10 October 1799 in Parish Church, Glossop. She married Jerry Sykes, born about 1780 in Woodhead, on 28 October 1821 in Glossop Parish Church. Jerry was a grocer when Harriet married. The area known as Jerrytown was named after him. Jerry and Sarah had two children:
     Harriet Sykes born about 1823.
     John Sykes, born about 1824, buried 14 May 1878 in Glossop Cemetery.
     Edward Sykes, born about 1826, died 5 May 1878 in aged 52. His father's will says he was a shopkeeper.
Jerry Sykes died on 4 December and was buried on 10 December 1856 in Littlemoor.
Sarah married John Ashton, born about 1810, in 1863.
John Ashton was buried on 10 November 1879 in Glossop Cemetery.
Sarah was buried on 5 September 1883 in Glossop Cemetery.
Martha Sydall was born on 25 October 1801 and baptised on 22 February 1802 in Parish Church, Glossop. She married Thomas Collier, born about 1797 in Mottram, son of Samuel Collier and Hannah Kershaw (see The Collier family of Howardtown) on 22 November 1822 in Parish Church, Glossop.
Joseph Syddal was born on 26 March 1803 in Tintwistle and baptised on 20 June 1803 in Parish Church, Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Spire Hollin & Woodcock Road. He married Ann Jackson, born 22 April 1801 in Simmondley, baptised 18 May 1801 in Top Chapel, Charlesworth (daughter of John and Peggy Jackson) on 13 November 1825 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had six children:
     James Siddal baptised 12 February 1826.
     John Siddal baptised 2 March 1828 in Parish Church, Glossop, died in his 53rd year on 4 April 1881, buried in Parish Church, Glossop. 1861 census aged 32, unmarried shop man.
     Sarah Sydall, baptised 6 May 1830 in Parish Church, Glossop, died at 6 weeks old on 22 May 1830, buried 23 May 1830 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     George Siddal baptised 29 May 1831.
     Charles Sydall, baptised 10 September 1834 in Parish Church, Glossop, died aged 1 year 8 months on 3 April 1836, buried in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Harriet Syddal, born about 1838 in Glossop. 1861 census aged 24, unmarried house servant. She married George Jackson, baptised 2 February 1829 in Glossop, in 1877 in Manchester.
At the 1861 census, Joseph was a grocer and corn dealer at 7 Tipping Street, Openshaw, aged 58, born Glossop. Also at the house was a visitor named Sarah Siddall, unmarried cotton weaver aged 22 born "Portfield".
Joseph Syddal, late of Tatton, died aged 65 on 5 March 1868 in Manchester and was buried at Parish Church, Glossop.
Ann died in her 73rd year on 17 June 1874 and was buried at Parish Church, Glossop.
George Siddall of Spire Hollin was born about 1807. He married Mary Bennett, born about 1806, on 16 November 1828 in Parish Church, Glossop. They had seven children:
     Sarah Siddall born about 1829.
     Eliza Siddall, baptised 7 November 1830 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     James Siddall, baptised 27 December 1833 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Ann Siddall, baptised 3 July 1837 in Parish Church, Glossop.
     Betty Siddall, born about 1843.
     John Siddall, born about 1846.
     George Siddall born about 1849.
At the time of the 1851 census the family was living at The Heath; George was a Railway Goods Manager and Farmer.
Mary was living with Sarah & family at 1881 census, described as formerly farmer's wife.
Mary died in her 82nd year on 10 July 1888 and was buried at Parish Church, Glossop.
George predeceased Mary as she was described as a widow in the parish register when she died.
Generation Five.
Child of John Syddall.
John Sydall was baptised on 20 December 1818 in Parish Church, Glossop. He and his wife Mary had a daughter, Ann Sydall, born about 1853, buried 1 January 1856 in Parish Church, Glossop, in her third year.
Child of James Syddall.
Ann Sydall was born about 1826 in Padfield, Glossop. She married James Wood, born about 1826 in Staleywood, Cheshire. They had two children:
     Ann Wood, born about 1864 in Padfield. 1881 census gives her age as 17.
     Thomas Wood, born about 1867 in Padfield. 1881 census gives his age as 14.
The family was at Windy Harbour, Glossop in 1881 census, both James and Ann aged 55.

Harriet Sykes was born about 1823. She married John Howard, born 21 October 1815, son of Joseph Howard and Mary Wardlow (see The Howards of Ludworth and Bridgefield) on 26 February 1844 in Glossop.

George Siddal was baptised on 29 May 1831 in Parish Church, Glossop. 1861 census aged 30, unmarried shop man. He married Elizabeth Clegg, born about 1835 in Manchester in 1863 in St John's, Manchester. They had four children:
     George Siddall born about 1867.
     Frances Beatrice Siddall born about 1869.
     John Siddall born about 1870.
     Joseph Siddall born about 1864.
Elizabeth died about 1880 in Manchester.
George married Susannah Clegg, born about 1843 in Manchester in 1881 in Prestwich.
Susannah died in 1883 in Prestwich.
At the 1891 census, George was a provision dealer living at 256 Oldham Road, Manchester.
George Siddal died in 1896 in Prestwich, Manchester.

Charles Siddall was born about 1856 in Glossop. He married Mary Jane Fabby, born about 1854 in Gorton, in 1877 in Manchester. They had five children:
     Charles Siddall, born about 1882 in Gorton.
     Joseph Siddall, born about 1884 in Gorton.
     Elizabeth Siddall, born about 1885 in Gorton.
     George Siddall, born about 1887 in Gorton.

George Siddall was born about 1867 in Manchester. He married Eleanor Boardman, born about 1873 in Manchester, in 1893 in Manchester. They had two children:
     Elizabeth Siddall, born about 1894 in Manchester. She married George Bell.
     Joseph Siddall, born about 1896 in Manchester. He married Lilian Moore.
Frances Beatrice Siddall was born about 1869 in Manchester. She lived at 22 Victoria Street, Ardwick in 1887. She married Walter George Carr, born about 1868 in Salford (son of John Carr and Ann Price) on 25 January 1888 in St Thomas's Church, Ardwick. They had three children:
     George Carr born about 1889.
     Elizabeth A Carr, born about 1890 in Manchester. She married Edward Cocksey, born about 1889 in Urmston, in1912 in Flixton.
     Beatrice Carr born about 1894.
John Siddall was born about 1870 in Manchester. He married Mary Woods, born about 1871 in Manchester, in 1890 in Manchester. They had a daughter, Mary B Siddall, born about 1893 in Manchester.
John Siddall died in 1900 in Prestwich and Mary died about 1901 in Prestwich.
Joseph Siddall was baptised on 28 August 1864 in Manchester. He married Elizabeth Eddleston, born about 1865 in Manchester, about 1888 in Manchester. They had a son, George Siddall, born about 1889 in Manchester. Elizabeth died in 1894 in Gorton.
Joseph married Elizabeth Ann Sutton, born about 1872 in Bangor, Wales, in 1896 in Stockport. They had a daughter, Marguerite Siddall, born about 1898 in Stockport.
Generation Seven.
Children of Frances Beatrice Siddall.
George Carr was born about 1889 in Manchester. He married Elizabeth Ann Walker, born about 1882 in Lancashire (daughter of Richard Walker and Elizabeth Price) on 26 July 1911 in St Michael's Church, Flixton. They had three children:
     George Siddall Carr, born 20 February 1913 in Barton upon Irwell, Stretford, died 24 April 1983 in Park Hospital, Davyhulme. He married Bessie Cliff on 1 February 1936 in Parish Church, Urmston. Bessie was, born 8 September 1914 in Barton upon Irwell, Stretford, died 23 April 1996 in James Paget Hospital, Great Yarmouth.
     Clifford Carr, born about 1915 in Barton upon Irwell, Stretford, died 1954 in Manchester. He married Hilda Ollerenshaw, born about 1912 in Blackpool, married in 1943 in Blackpool.
     Elsie Carr, born about 1918 in Barton upon Irwell, died 1954 in Barton district, Manchester. She married John Young, born about 1915, in 1939 in St Michael's Church, Flixton.
Elizabeth died on 26 June 1949 in Flixton.
George Carr died on 17 February 1959 in Flixton.
Beatrice Carr was born about 1894 in Manchester. She married William Whitnall, born about 1895 in Flixton, in 1914 in Flixton.
