Joined Yorks & Lancs Regiment on 7 November 1901 aged 18. He had been a miner working for John Henry Bennett at Earlsheaton and lived at 35 Northgate, Dewsbury.
Posted private No 9637, embodied 9 December 1901, disembodied 25 October 1902. Discharged by purchase 1 December 1902.
Served in South Africa 24 December 1901 to 28 August 1902. South Africa Medal 1901-2 + 3 clasps "Cape Colony".
Three minor offences in South Africa in 1902.
Attestation 9 February 1903 aged 19, a groom. Enlisted for 3 years plus 9 on reserve. He volunteered for the Royal Engineers but was transferred to the Royal Artillery on 11 February, No 14670, Gunner. Next of kin recorded as Susan Fryer (mother) 35 Northgate, Dewsbury.
Stationed at Spike Island then Gibraltar (10 November 1903), Malta (12 November 1904) and Plymouth (27 October 1905).

Discharged from Fort Brockhurst, Gosport on 10th February 1916 "on termination of his first period of engagement", aged 32. He was a groom and "good with horses". Intended place of residence 4 Croft Street, Dewsbury.
Awarded the 1914 Star 7 May 1920 the War Medal 14 December 1920 and the Victory Medal 26 April 1921.
