Family tale said he ran the Elephant & Castle and Roundhouse pubs in London. According to the web site http://pubshistory.com, the 1938 Post Office Directory shows Joe Platt Kinder as landlord of the Round House, 83 & 85 Wardour Street, St James, Westminster and the 1944 PO Directory has him as landlord of the Holloway Castle, 392 Camden Road N7.

I got a lot of pleasure out of my holidays this year for I visited many places and met many interesting: people. A couple of Glossop lads I met in the West End of London were Julian Mitchell (the great character actor whom most Glossopians have seen on the screen) and Joseph Platt Kinder, elder son of the late Councillor George Kinder. Joe Is a breezy lad, whom Soho seems to have taken to its heart. He has wandered around quite a lot, having included Australia in his wanderings, but he soon tired of colonial life and came back to his native Glossop. The wanderlust however, was too strong, and soon he was off again to distant places. He had business deals with the late Jimmy White, but now appears to have settled down as host at the Round House, Wardour-street.
"Joe from the north" he is affectionately called, and his hotel is the rendezvous of stage and sporting stars. He introduced me to many people who are often in the news. One very interesting young man I met was brother of the famous Houston sisters, who is now a well-known novelist. Journalists, Press photographers, and Press cartoonists frequent Joe's house; indeed, it is the gathering ground for those who lead a more or less Bohemian life.
Joe took me to the roof of his hotel, showing me London by night, and pointed out to me a post office, the architect for which was a Hollingworth man of that name, and he also told me that some years ago in that post office, there worked a young lady who became wife of a recent tenant of the Norfolk Arms Hotel at Glossop.
