Local Co-operative Societies.

The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, founded in 1844, is usually considered the first successful co-operative enterprise.
The first co-operative in Glossop Dale was the Hadfield Equitable Co-operative Society, formed in 1860, with The Glossop Dale New Industrial Co-operative Society following some six or so years later.

These links provide more detail: Hadfield Equitable Co-operative Society     Glossop Dale New Industrial Co-operative Society     Glossop Dale Society branch photos.

Many people had long and successful careers in the Glossop Dale Society. Two examples are William Ellis Goldthorp and William Broadley.
