Swire family of Keighley, Hyde, Glossop and Hollingworth.


Generation One.

John Swire was born about 1816 in Keighley, Yorkshire. He married Mary Whitehead, born about 1819 in Tonge, Lancashire. They moved to Hyde where John was a boot & shoe maker and clogger. They moved to Glossop in 1860, John buying the business at 28 High Street West. John and Mary had eight identified children:
     Ellen Swire, born 1845 in Hyde, baptised 22 August 1847 in Denton. She married Charles Hadfield on 29 April 1866 in St. Mark's, Dukinfield.
     John Swire born 16 January 1847.
     Thomas Swire, born 1849 in Hyde, baptised 20 May 1849 in St. George, Hyde, died 1851 in Hyde.
     Henry Swire, born 1852 in Hyde. He ran the shop at 21 Victoria Street, Glossop. He never married and died in 1931 in Glossop
     William Swire, born 1853 in Hyde, died 1867 in Glossop.
     Thomas Swire, born 1856 in Hyde. He married Mary Elizabeth Bowman on 10 October 1883 in Glossop. Thomas died on 26 October 1929.
     Hezekiah Swire, born 15 October 1858 in Hyde. He married Annie Housley on 28 September 1885 in All Saints, Glossop. He worked in the family business, only retiring about two and a half years before he died on 29 September 1950. He was buried on 2 October 1950 in Glossop Cemetery.
     Mary Swire, born 1862 in Glossop. She married Henry Hadfield on 20 October 1887 in All Saints, Glossop.
John Swire died on 18 September 1888 in Spire Hollin, Glossop. Mary died in 1895 in Glossop.

Generation Two.

John Swire was born on 16 January 1847 in Hyde, baptised 16 May 1847 in St. George's, Hyde. He married Mary Ellen Kay on 22 September 1874 in All Saints, Glossop. Her father, Jacob Kay, was landlord of The Junction Inn. John was in business as a clog manufacturer at 50 Woolley Bridge, Hadfield, then diversified into boot & clog making and repairing at 38/40 Woolley Bridge, Hadfield. John and Mary had seven identified children:
     Harold Kay Swire, born 1875 in Hadfield, died aged 15 weeks and buried on 20 October 1875 in Glossop Cemetery.
     Harry Swire born 12 July 1876.
     Ernest Swire born 1878.
     Norman Kay Swire, born 1880 in Hadfield, baptised 28 March 1880 in All Saints, Glossop. Emigrated to Canada in 1912. Departed Liverpool 10 May 1912 bound for Quebec. Died 6 October 1928 in Wellesley Hospital, Toronto (perforated duodenal ulcer), buried 9 October 1928 in Necropolis Cemetery, Toronto.
     Eleanor Swire, born 1882 in Hadfield. She married Aaron Moores on 3 June 1919 in St Andrew's, Hadfield. Eleanor was buried on 8 May 1939 in Glossop Cemetery. Aaron Moores died on 14 February 1960m and was buried on 16 February 1960 at Spring Street Chapel, Hollingworth.
     John Oswald Swire, born 20 October 1884 in Hadfield, baptised 7 December 1884 in All Saints, Glossop. He married Susan Elsie Melland on 2 October 1910 in St Andrew's, Hadfield and became a self employed master butcher at 83 High Street East, Glossop. He died on 4 May 1955 in Ashton General Hospital,.
     Gordon Swire, born 31 October 1886 in Hadfield, baptised 30 January 1887 in All Saints, Glossop. He married Annie Hampshire on 25 March 1913 in St Andrew's, Hadfield. They lived at 36 Simmondley Lane whilst Gordon worked at Dinting Printworks but then moved to Rosset, Wrexham, where they had a grocery and confectionery business. Gordon died on 1 January 1942 in Chester infirmary and was buried on 5 January 1942 in Rosset Parish Church, Wrexham.
Mary was buried on 10 April 1908 in Glossop Cemetery.
John married Florence Louisa Kay (Mary Ellen's sister) on 12 May 1912 in Blackley, Manchester, born 1861 in Tintwistle,aged 81. Florence:
John Swire died on 19 October 1933 in 38 Woolley Bridge and was buried on 23 October 1933 in Glossop Cemetery.
Florence died on 10 January 1943 in Hadfield and was buried on 13 January 1943 in Glossop cemetery.

Generation Three.

Harry Swire was born on 12 July 1876 in Hollingworth, died 1959. He married Emma Charlesworth in 1903 and became a boot & clog maker at Station Road, Hadfield, initially at number 90 and then at number 125. Harry and Emma had three children:
     Annie Swire, born 5 February 1904 in Hadfield, buried 22 October 1997 in Glossop Cemetery.
     John Swire, born 15 September 1906 in Hadfield, buried 18 February 1982 in Glossop Cemetery.
     Mary Ellen Swire, born 23 January 1911 in Hadfield, buried 30 June 2004.
Emma was buried on 21 November 1946 in Glossop Cemetery. Harry Swire died in 1959.
Annie and Mary ran the business for many years after their father died.

Ernest Swire, born 1878 in Hadfield, baptised 9 June 1878 in All Saints, Glossop. He married Florence Sheppard on 3 October 1905 in St Peter's Ashton under Lyne. They set up home in Hollingworth where Ernest had a business as a clogger & boot repairer at Green Lane and then 96 Market Street. They had three children:
     Irene Mary Swire, born 13 August 1906 in Hollingworth. She married Harry Thorley on 17 December 1932 in Hadfield. Irene died on 27 January 1997.
     Harold Kay Swire, born 3 July 1909 in Hollingworth. He married Joan Burgess in 1949. Harold died in 1996 .
     Gordon Swire was born on 2 March 1911 in Hollingworth and became a greengrocer. He married Dora Ball in 1939 in Christ Church, Tintwistle, and they set up home at 6 Millbrook, Hollingworth. Their daughter, Vivienne Isabel Swire was born on 8 April 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire. She married Derek J. Westwood on 21 July 1962. Vivienne died on 29 December 2022 in Clapham, London.
Ernest Swire was buried on 20 June 1926 in Mottram.
