Hadfields of Willow Grove.


The Willow Grove Inn was the location of the reputed celebration of the life of James Wood in 1850 (see Jam o' Jonathan's).

Generation One.

Samuel Hadfield, of Glossop & Hadfield, linen weaver & spinner was possibly the Samuel baptised on 20 October 1729 to Thomas Hadfield, married to Mary Hambleton on 12 April 1759 at Glossop and buried on 18 April 1794 at Glossop. He had two children:
     Thomas Hadfield, baptised 20 July 1758.
     William Hadfield, baptised 27 October 1760.

Generation Two.

Thomas Hadfield, spinner, was baptised on 20 July 1758 in Glossop. He married Mary Tunnincliffe, born about 1766 (daughter of John Tunnincliffe) on 20 April 1788 in Glossop. They had five children:
     Thomas Hadfield born 5 June 1788.
     Samuel Hadfield, born 26 August and baptised 19 September 1790 in Glossop, died aged 4 on 18 March and buried on 22 March 1795 in Glossop.
     Nanny Hadfield, born 1 April and baptised 4 June 1792 in Glossop, died aged 2 on 20 March and buried on 22 March 1795 in Glossop.
     Mary Hadfield, born 7 May and baptised 4 August 1795 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 46. Census 1851 at Willow Grove, age 56, Formerly weaver cotton.
     Matthew Hadfield, born 24 February and baptised 21 August 1797 in Glossop.
Mary died aged 32 and was buried on 1 July 1798 in Glossop.
Thomas Hadfield died aged 71 and was buried on 6 May 1830 in Glossop.

William Hadfield was baptised on 27 October 1760 in Glossop. Parish register entries describe him as of Glossop, Bank & Hattersley, cotton spinner. He married Sophia Jackson, born about 1764 (daughter of Abraham Jackson) on 22 April 1784 in Glossop. They had ten children:
     Samuel Hadfield, born 14 July and baptised 14 July 1784 in Glossop.
     Mary Hadfield, born 19 March and baptised 16 April 1786 in Glossop.
     Betty Hadfield, born 2 March and baptised 26 April 1790 in Glossop, died aged 2 on 29 May and buried 31 May 1792 in Glossop.
     Betty Hadfield, born 9 June and baptised 15 July 1792 in Glossop.
     Ann Hadfield, born 1 July and baptised 9 August 1795 in Glossop.
     Nancy Hadfield, born 18 February and baptised 26 March 1798 in Glossop.
     Charlotte Hadfield, born 22 September and baptised 26 October 1800 in Glossop.
     William Hadfield, born 12 August and baptised 19 September 1803 in Glossop.
     Charles Hadfield, born 18 January and baptised 1 March 1806 in Glossop.
     Thomas Hadfield, born 29 January and baptised 12 March 1809 in Glossop.
Sophia died, aged 62 of Hattersley, and was buried on 4 June 1826 in Glossop.

Generation Three.

Thomas Hadfield was born on 5 June and baptised on 28 June 1788 in Glossop. Of Allmensheath, weaver & cotton dresser in baptism records. He married Ellen Garside, born 18 February and baptised 25 March 1792 in Glossop (daughter of John Garside and Betty Sidebottom) on 3 January 1814 in Glossop. They had nine children:
     Samuel Hadfield, baptised 20 February 1814 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 27.
     Mary Hadfield, baptised 8 October 1815.
     Thomas Hadfield, baptised 1 March 1818.
     William Hadfield, baptised 12 April 1820 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 21.
     Elizabeth Hadfield, baptised 2 June 1822 in Glossop, buried 23 January 1828 in Glossop (age 5).
     Martha Hadfield, baptised 29 June 1824 in Glossop, buried 16 April 1828 in Glossop (aged 3).
     Ellen Hadfield, baptised 23 September 1827 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 13. Census 1851 at Willow Grove, age 23, Weaver cotton. Census 1861 at Willow Grove, age 32, Cotton weaver. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 41, Cotton weaver.
     John Hadfield, baptised 22 February 1830, buried 7 April 1831 in Glossop (age 14 months).
     Sarah Hadfield, baptised 4 June 1832 in Glossop, buried 15 May 1833 in Glossop (age 1).
At the census of 1841 the family was at Willow Grove, Thomas aged 52 and Ellen aged 49.
Thomas Hadfield died, aged 54, on 29 May and was buried on 2 June 1842 in Glossop.
Ellen is recorded as a widow at Willow Grove in the censuses of 1851 and 1861; age 58, Beer seller and age 69, Retired publican.
Ellen died, aged 74, on 11 April and was buried on 14 April 1866 in Glossop.

Generation Four.

Mary Hadfield was baptised on 8 October 1815 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 24. She married Edmund Lamb, born 5 June 1825 in Penistone (son of David Lamb and Hannah Haigh), on 13 July 1847 in Glossop. Edmund is recorded as a shoemaker of Padfield in the marriage register entry. In the census of 1851 they are at Willow Grove, Mary age 34, Weaver cotton and Edmund age 25, Shoemaker. They had three children:
     David Lamb, born 1848 in Glossop, died 1849 in Glossop (age 1).
     Ellen Lamb, born 1850 in Glossop. Census 1851 at Willow Grove, age 1. Census 1861 at Willow Grove, age 11, Scholar.
     Sarah Lamb, born 1851.

Thomas Hadfield baptised 1 March 1818 in Glossop. Census 1841 at Willow Grove, age 23. Census 1851 at Willow Grove, age 32, Shoe maker. Worker in steel when Emma was baptised in 1864. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 52, Labourer. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 62, Cordwainer. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 72, Shoe maker. He married Emma Tower, born about 1833 in Burwardsley, Cheshire (daughter of William Tower), on 20 June 1859 in St Michael's Church, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. They had nine children:
     Elizabeth Hadfield, baptised 29 July 1860 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 10, Cotton weaver. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 20, Cotton weaver. She married Joseph Darwent, born about 1847 (son of Joseph Darwent) on 13 April 1891 in Glossop. Joseph was a widowed labourer aged 44 when he married Elizabeth.
     Sarah Hadfield, baptised 20 October 1861 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 9, Cotton heald knitter. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 19, Cotton weaver. She married William Brocklehurst, born about 1863 (son of William Brocklehurst) on 22 October 1883 in Glossop. William is described as a paper maker in the marriage register entry.
     Alice Hadfield born 26 January 1863.
     Emma Hadfield, baptised 11 May 1864 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 6. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 16, Cotton weaver. She married William Darwent, born about 1865 (son of Thomas Darwent) on 17 February 1890 in Glossop. William is described as a spinner aged 20 in the marriage register entry.
     Edward Hadfield born 19 November 1865.
     William Hadfield, baptised 7 February 1869 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 2. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 11, Cotton piecer. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 21, Cotton spinner. Census 1901 at Willow Grove, age 32, Cotton spinner. Emigrated to Canada in 1812.
     Mary Ellen Hadfield, baptised 6 August 1871 in Glossop. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 8. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 19, Cotton weaver. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1928. She married Joseph Lee, born about 1877 (son of Henry Lee) on 28 June 1899 in Glossop. Joseph is described as a labourer aged 22 of Woolley Bridge Road in marriage register entry.
     James Hadfield, baptised 11 October 1874 in Glossop. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 7. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 16, Cotton piecer. Census 1901 at Willow Grove, age 26, General labourer. Moved to Sheffield.
     Eli Hadfield, baptised 24 June 1877 in Glossop, died about 1922. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 3. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 14, Cotton weaver.
Thomas Hadfield died, aged 81, on 26 March and was buried on 28 March 1900 in Glossop cemetery (grave 4223).
Emma continued to live at Willow Grove and is shown in the census of 1901 there as a widow age 69.
Emma died aged 71 and was buried on 17 May 1906 in Glossop cemetery (grave 4223).

Generation Five.

Alice Hadfield was born on 26 January and baptised on 29 March 1863 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 8, Cotton heald knitter. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 18, Cotton weaver. She married James William Whiteley, born about 1867 in Linthwaite, Yorkshire (son of James Whiteley) on 11 April 1887 in Glossop. James is described as a weaver aged 20 in the marriage register entry. They had three children:
     Minnie Whitely, born 17 October 1887 in Glossop. 1891 census at 16 Thorpe Street, Glossop, age 5. 1901 census at 197 High Street East, Glossop, cotton tenter age 13. 1911 census at 197 High Street East, Glossop, calico weaver age 23. 1939 register at 197 High Street East, Glossop, unpaid domestic duties. She died age 73 and was buried on 29 June 1961 in Glossop cemetery.
     William Whitely, born 1889 in Glossop. 1891 census at 16 Thorpe Street, Glossop, age 1. 1901 census at 197 High Street East, Glossop, age 11. 1911 census at 197 High Street East, Glossop, grocer's assistant, Cooperative Society age 21.
     Annie Whitely, born about 1902 in Glossop. 1911 census at 197 High Street East, Glossop, scholar age 9.
In the 1891 census the family was at 16 Thorpe Street, Glossop. James was a cotton tape weaver age 24 and Alice a cotton weaver age 27.
James is listed as a hawker at 112 High Street East, Glossop, in Bulmer's 1895 directory.
They moved to 197 High Street East, Glossop where James is listed as a draper in Kelly's 1899, 1900, 1908 & 1912 directories
In the 1901 census James was a hawker of drapery age 34 and Alice a cotton weaver age 38.
In 1911 James was a general draper age 44 and Alice aged 48.
James died, aged 57, and was buried on 26 September 1923 in Glossop cemetery.
Alice continued to live at 197 High Street East, with Minnie. She is listed as a draper in Kelly's 1925, 1928, 1932, 1936 & 1941 directories.
In the 1939 register Alice is at 197 High Street East, Glossop, widowed Shopkeeper drapery.
Alice died, aged 85, and was buried on 25 September 1948 in Glossop cemetery.

Edward Hadfield was born on 19 November 1865 in Glossop and baptised on 20 May 1866 in Glossop. Census 1871 at Willow Grove, age 5. Census 1881 at Willow Grove, age 15, Cotton piecer. Census 1891 at Willow Grove, age 24, Cotton spinner. Living at 93 High Street East, Glossop when his father died in 1900. Census 1901 at 25, Shrewsbury Street, Glossop, age 35, spinner in cotton mill. He moved to Oldham in the early years of the 20th century and is shown in the 1939 register at 13 Kilburn Street, Oldham, Retired mule spinner, widowed. He had a letter of reminiscences published in the Glossop Chronicle on 10 October 1952. He married Eliza Ann Aveson, born about 1867 (daughter of Thomas Aveson and Martha Senior) on 27 July 1891 in Glossop. They had five children:
     Jessie Hadfield, born about 1893 in Glossop, baptised 5 February 1893 in Glossop. Census 1901 at 25, Shrewsbury Street, Glossop, age 8.
     Harry Hadfield, born about 1898 in Glossop, baptised 3 August 1898 in Glossop. Census 1901 at 25, Shrewsbury Street, Glossop, age 2.
     Albert Hadfield, baptised 7 February 1900 in Glossop, buried 11 March 1901 in Glossop cemetery (age 14 months, grave 4223).
     Gertrude Hadfield, baptised 29 July 1894 in Glossop, buried 28 June 1897 in Glossop cemetery (age 2, grave 1485).
     Alice Hadfield, baptised 19 April 1896 in Glossop, buried 9 January 1897 in Glossop cemetery (age 11 months, grave 1485).
Edward Hadfield died in 1953 in Oldham.
