A Bowers family of Glossop.


Generation One.

The earliest ancestor it has been possible to trace is John Bowers. His wife was possibly named Mary. The Glossop parish register records the burial, on 18 May 1800, of 78 year old Mary Bowers of Glossop, wife of John Bowers.
Their son was also named John Bowers.

Generation Two.

John Bowers first marriage was to Dorothy Bennett, baptised on 4 July 1759, daughter of George Bennett and Betty Hamson (see The Bennett family of Whitfield) on 22 March 1778 in Glossop.
John and Dorothy had one son, George Bowers, born 1 February 1783 in Glossop and baptised 4 February 1783 at All Saints, Glossop.
Dorothy died on 15 February and was buried 18 February 1783 in Glossop.
John's second marriage was to Asenath Hadfield on 2 October 1785 in Mottram (see A Hadfield family of Whitfield). John and Asenath had five children:
     James Bowers, born on 24 July and baptised on 3 September 1786 in Glossop. He died on 15 May 1790 and was buried 3 days later in Glossop churchyard.
     Joseph Bowers, born on 20 May and baptised on 26 May 1788 in Glossop. He died on 29 May 1789 and was buried 2 days later in Glossop churchyard.
     Joseph Bowers, born on 4 March 1790 in Glossop.
     William Bowers, born on 12 April 1792.
     Anne Bowers, born on 3 November 1794.
     Betty Bowers, born on 7 April and baptised on 21 May 1797 in Glossop.

Generation Three.

Joseph Bowers was born on 4 March and baptised on 14 April 1790 in Glossop. He married Betty Howe on 22 July 1811 at Glossop Parish Church. They had 13 children including a daughter named Asenath born 6 February 1813.
Asenath Bowers married Levi Jackson in 21 October 1832. He was a band and rope manufacturer at Hobroad (Hobroyd) and one of Glossop's first Councillors when it became a Borough in 1866. Asenath and Levi had 10 children including Joseph Jackson born about 1850.
Joseph married Amelia Jones. They had 3 sons including Arthur Walter Jackson who Caroline Bowler of Glossop on 25 November 1895. They emigrated first to South Africa and then to Waterford, Connecticut, USA.

William Bowers was born on 12 April and baptised on 15 May 1792 in Glossop. He married Mary Hall on 17 April 1814 in Glossop. They had a daughter, Asenath Bowers, born 26 March and baptised 25 Apr 1825 in Glossop Wesleyan Methodist church. The baptism record describes William as a cotton spinner of Glossop and wrongly names Mary as Sarah. Asenath married Enoch Fielding in 1851. He had been born in 1824 at Tintwistle. the son of George Fielding (described in the 1841 census as a Clockmaker aged 50 at Hall Wall Well, Tintwistle) and his wife Betty (aged 44 in 1841). In that census Enoch was a 17 year old cotton worker. The census of 1891 gave Asenath's age as 66 and described Enoch as a watchmaker & jeweller aged 67. They were living at 24 High Street West, Glossop.

Anne Bowers was born on 3 November 1794 in Whitfield and baptised on 7 December 1794 in Glossop parish church. She married her cousin James Hadfield, son of William Hadfield and Martha Goodison (see The family of James Hadfield of Cross Cliffe).
