Neal family of Gamesley and Brookfield.


Generation One.

John Neal (son of Thomas and Ann Neal) was born in Tibshelf and baptised there on 30 October 1808. He moved to Gamesley and became a labourer at the Dinting printworks. He married Hannah Dewsnap, daughter of Samuel Dewsnap and Hannah Hill (see Dewsnap family of Hargate Hill and Simmondley), on 1 September 1834 in Glossop Parish Church. They had seven identified children:
     Thomas Neal born 16 January 1835.
     Samuel Neal born 28 July 1836.
     Betty Neal, born 1838 in Glossop. She married Thomas Whitehead, born 1842 in Woolley Bridge (son of Ellen Whitehead), on 7 January 1866 in Ashton under Lyne. Betty died on 4 April 1893 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel. Thomas (of Brookfield, Dinting) died aged 60 on 26 March 1903 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
     Ann Neal, born 1840, died 16 March 1841, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 1.
     Ann Neal, born 1842. She married Thomas Higginbottom, a 25 year old carter of Audenshaw (son of Peter Higginbottom), on 3 November 1872 in St Stephen's, Audenshaw. Thomas (of Gamesley) died aged 34 on 27 August 1884 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel. Ann died aged 49 on 17 January 1891 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
     Hannah Neal born 1848.
     John Neal born 1851.
Hannah died aged 69 on 27 November 1878 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
John Neal of Gamesley died aged 74 on 18 July 1883 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.

Generation Two.

Thomas Neal was born on 16 January and baptised on 5 April 1835 at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel. He became a joiner, initially in Glossop but then moving to Bury towards the end of the 1860s, living in Barlow Fold off Manchester Road, an area where subsequent generations remained. Thomas married Betty Jackson, born about 1836 in Glossop, in 1861 in Glossop and they had seven identified children:
     Mary Neal, born 1862 in Glossop. She married Edwin Barlow, a cloth stretcher in a bleach works, in 1909 in Bury. Mary died in 1936 in and Edwin on 19 March 1938.
     Sarah Ann Neal, born 5 April 1863 in Glossop. She married Abraham Roberts, a clerk in the gas works, born about 1862 in Ramsbottom, in 1897 in Bury. Abraham died in 1907 and Sarah in 1940, both in Bury.
     Joseph Stafford Neal born 1864.
     John Neal born 19 October 1866.
     Hannah Neal, born 3 November 1868 in Bury, died 1953 in Bury.
     Samuel Neal born 13 April 1871.
     William Neal, born 1873 in Bury, died 1 October 1874, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 12 months.
Thomas Neal died aged 65 on 5 November 1900 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
Betty died aged 81 on 8 May 1917 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.

Samuel Neal was born on 28 July and baptised on 9 October 1836 at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel, Charlesworth. He spent most of his working life as a labourer at the printworks. Samuel married his cousin Elizabeth Dewsnap, born 23 April 1830 in Ashton under Lyne, daughter of James Dewsnap and Mary Hallows (see Dewsnap family of Hargate Hill and Simmondley), in 1862. They had six identified children:
     James Dewsnap Neal, born 1863, died 22 August and buried 25 August 1863 at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 5 months.
     Mary Jane Neal, born 1865 in Ashton under Lyne. Initially a cotton weaver she then became a domestic servant for her aunt Hannah Shepley at Gamesley House, where she is found in the censuses of 1901 and 1911. Later in 1911 she married Harry Broadbent, born 10 January 1864, blacksmith at the printworks, in Brookfield Congregational Chapel and they moved into 43 Glossop Road, Gamesley. Mary Jane died on 4 March 1929. Harry died on 28 May 1941 at Woods Hospital.
     Bertha Neal born 1866.
     John William Neal born 1868.
     Samuel Henry Neal born 4 May 1870.
     Walter Neal born 1871.
Elizabeth died in 1897, aged 66.
Samuel Neal died in 1909, aged 72.

Hannah Neal was born in 1848 in Charlesworth. After working as a weaver she married Charles Woffenden, son of William Shepley and Harriet Woffenden (see The Shepley family of Old Glossop and Brookfield) in 1868 in St. Michael's, Ashton-Under-Lyne.

John Neal was born in 1851 in Glossop. He married Emma Booth, born 1851 (daughter of George and Mary Booth), on 5 September 1875 in St Stephen's, Audenshaw (see A Booth Family of Hargate Hill). They had five identified children:
     James Neal, born 1877, died 18 May 1879, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel (of Gamesley aged 2).
     George Neal, born 11 November 1875 in Gamesley, died 19 October 1939, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 63.
     Maggie Neal, born 7 October 1878, died 17 May 1948, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 69.
     Sydney Neal, born 1881 in Gamesley. Emigrated to USA 1907 (recorded as Sidney McNeal at Vancouver en route for Seattle).
     James Neal born 1882.
Emma died aged 31 and was buried on 20 May 1882 at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
John Neal (of Pikes Lane) died aged 62 on 16 December 1913 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.

Generation Three.

Children of Thomas Neal.

Joseph Stafford Neal was born in 1864 in Glossop. A joiner, he married Sarah Gregory, born 10 November 1866 in Bury (daughter of John Gregory), in 1890 in Bury. They lived initially at 23 Nuttall Square before moving to 618 Manchester Road, Bury. They had one child:
     Fred Neal was born in 1893 in Bury. After being an apprentice joiner he joined the RAF in the first world war as an air mechanic 2nd class at No. 3 Stores Depot. He died in the River Roch at Blackford Bridge on 13 December 1918 and was buried in a war grave in Bury cemetery.
Joseph Stafford Neal, of 618 Manchester Road, Bury, died on 25 January 1928.
Sarah, of 618 Manchester Road, Bury, died on 6 January 1945.

John Neal was born on 19 October 1866 in Glossop. He worked mainly as a cloth packer in a calico print works. He married Susannah Howarth, born in 1870 in Heywood (daughter of Edward Howarth and Elizabeth Green), in 1900 in Bury. They lived initially with Susannah's parents at 29, Channing Street, Heywood before moving to Barlow Fold. John and Susannah had five identified children:
     Thomas Neal, born 1 November 1900 in Bury. He married Annie Sykes, born 15 August 1904, in 1925 in Bury.
     Edward Stafford Neal, born 13 September 1903 in Bury. He married Mary Alice Clegg, born 16 August 1902, in 1928 in Bury. Edward Neal of 632 Manchester Road, Bury, died in 28 January 1970.
     Elizabeth Neal, born 13 September 1903 in Bury, died 1903 in Bury.
     Jack Neal, born 1905 in Bury, died 1906 in Bury.
     Samuel Neal, born and died in 1908 in Bury.
Susannah died in 1939 in Bury.
John Neal died in 1949 in Bury.

Samuel Neal was born on 13 April 1871 in Bury and spent his working life as a bookkeeper in the Bury municipal gas works. He married Eliza Vernon, born 12 May 1874 in Delamere, Cheshire, in 1898 in Bury and they had one child:
     Clarence Stafford Neal was born on 24 October 1901 in Bury. He married Alice Lillian Warburton, born 8 May 1902, in 1927 in Bury. Clarence (of South Field, 21 Parliament Street, Bury) died on 14 September 1959 in General Hospital, Bury.
Samuel Neal (of 23 Nelson Street, Bury) died on 3 October 1941 at 371 Manchester Road, Bury.
Eliza (of 17 Brierley Street, Bury, widow) died on 11 April 1958 at 21 Parliament Street, Bury.

Children of Samuel Neal.

Bertha Neal was born in 1866 in Glossop. She married Charles Henry Woodward in 1901 in Brookfield Congregational Chapel. They had two children:
     Stanley Woodward, born 1904 in Glossop.
     Amy Elizabeth Woodward, born 1908 in Glossop.
Charles emigrated to Canada in 1910 and the family followed him in 1912 when he had established a home for them.

John William Neal was born in 1868 in Glossop. He married Elizabeth Osborne, born 1861 in Hathersage, on 15 February 1893 in Brookfield Congregational Chapel, and they set up home at Brookfield. They had two children:
     Percy Neal born 1894.
     Evelyn Osborne Neal, born 30 August 1899 in Glossop, died 1966 in Ashton under Lyne.
Elizabeth died on 21 October 1917 in Charlesworth.
John William Neal died in 1923 in Glossop.

Samuel Henry Neal was born on 4 May 1870. He married Mary Ann Hart, born 24 October 1875 in Armagh, Ireland (daughter of George Hart), on 9 February 1901 in St Mark's, Cheetham Hill. After living with his father they are found in the 1911 census at 4 Woolley Bridge, Hollingworth and in the 1939 register at 67 Wilfred Street, Manchester. They had two children:
     Vincent Neal, born 29 March 1902 in Glossop. He worked as a clerk for an Iron & Steel Merchant. He married Florence Collinge (daughter of William Collinge), a 27 year old biscuit packer of Goodman Street, Blackley, on 31 May 1928 in the United Methodist Church, Market Street, Blackley. Vincent died on 7 April 1956 in Crumpsall Hospital, Manchester (of 30 Parkhill Avenue, Crumpsall).
     Laureen Neal, born 21 Jun 1903 in Glossop. She married Arthur Wild, born 18 September 1906, rate collector and assessor for the City of Manchester, in 1932 in Manchester. Arthur died on 15 September 1974 in Stockport. Laureen died on 27 November 1988 in Mauldeth Home, Heaton Mersey.
Samuel Henry Neal died aged 71 on 10 July 1941 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.
Mary died aged 86 on 18 March 1962, and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.

Walter Neal was born in 1871 in Glossop. He married Elizabeth Alice Lomax, born 1872 in Dinting, in 1895 in Brookfield Congregational Chapel. The family initially lived at Brookfield but then moved to Halifax where they are found at 79 Essex Street in the 1911 census. They had five children:
     Hannah Neal, born 1895 in Glossop, died 1895 in Glossop.
     Samuel Neal, born 1897 in Glossop.
     Lily Neal, born 1901 in Glossop.
     Walter Neal, born 1906 in Halifax.
     Arthur Neal, born 1909 in Halifax.

Child of John Neal.

James Neal was born in 1882. He married Martha Roberts Haynes, born about 1882 in Heaton Chapel, Cheshire, in 1903. They had five children:
     Emma Neal born 10 August 1903. She married Frederick Fletcher in 1940 in Bury.
     Harold Neal, born 1907, died 27 November 1907, buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel aged 7 months.
     Ethel Neal, born 1 Jun 1908 in Glossop. She married Joseph Cooper, born 18 November 1905 (son of John Thomas Cooper), on 16 April 1927 in St James', Whitfield.
     Marion Neal, born 7 July 1909 in Glossop.
     Mary Neal, born 1911 in Glossop.
     Thomas Haynes Neal, born 1912 in Glossop, buried 7 September 1912 in Glossop cemetery aged 7 weeks.
It appears that the family may have tried emigrating to Australia. The entry for Marion (of 16 Oldham Road) in the Duke Of Norfolk School Infants admission register shows her joining on 24 June 1913, leaving 12 November 1914 (gone to Australia) and being readmitted on 27 November 1916. James and Emma were recorded in the 1939 register at 2 Layland Street, Bury but no further record of Martha, Marion or Mary has been found.
James Neal died aged 64 on 11 March 1947 and was buried at Charlesworth Congregational Chapel.

Generation Four.

Child of John William Neal.

Percy Neal was born in 1894 in Glossop. He married Lydia Ashton, born 13 Jun 1899 (daughter of Samuel Henry Ashton), on 4 November 1922 in St James', Whitfield. They had two children:
     Doreen Neal, born 9 August 1925, died 1974.
     Jack Neal, born 18 December 1933, died 1993.
Percy Neal died aged 41 and was buried on 16 July 1935 in Glossop cemetery.
Lydia died aged 68 and was buried on 11 March 1968 in Glossop cemetery.
