The descendants of George Newton of Padfield.
Generation One.
George Newton of Padfield was born about 1709. He and his wife Ellen had six children:
     Mary Newton born about 1734.
     Robert Newton born about 1737, died 23 December 1798, buried at Glossop Parish Church. MI gives his age as 61.
     George Newton born about 1738, died 1 May 1812, buried at Glossop Parish Church. MI gives his age as 74.
     Betty Newton born about 1743.
     Ellen Newton born about 1746.
     William Newton born about 1750.
George Newton died, aged 53, on 20 June 1762 and was buried at Glossop Parish Church.
Ellen died on 26 May 1773 and was buried at Glossop Parish Church.
Generation Two.
Betty Newton was born about 1743. She married Samuel Wood, baptised 1 April 1746 in Glossop Parish Church (son of Samuel Wood and Anne Massey) on 28 August 1768 in Glossop Parish Church. The parish registers describes Samuel as of Hadfield and Crossecliffe. Betty and Samuel
had nine children:
     William Wood baptised 14 January 1769.
     James Wood baptised 6 February 1771.
     Ann Wood, buried 7 December 1774 at Glossop Parish Church.
     George Wood, baptised 15 April 1775 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Ann Wood, baptised August 1776 or 1767.
     John Wood, baptised 10 August 1778 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Samuel Wood, born 12 June and baptised 25 June 1787 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Ann Wood, baptised 4 April 1780 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Peter Wood born 11 October 1782.
Samuel Wood was buried on 17 July 1800 at Glossop Parish Church.
Ellen Newton was born about 1746. She married Joseph Hadfield, born about 1744, son of James Goddard (see The descendants of James Goddard of Waterside) on 28 March 1776 in Glossop.
William Newton of Padfield was born about 1750 and died about 1823. He married Betty Wood, baptised 27 February 1746 in Glossop Parish Church, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah Wood (see Jam o' Jonathan's). They had a son, William Newton, born 18 March 1790.
Generation Three.
Children of Betty Newton.
William Wood of Hadfield was baptised on 14 January 1769 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Betty Bower, born about 1771, daughter of John Bower (see The descendants of John Bower of Hadfield) on 11 September 1791 in Glossop Parish Church. They had a daughter, Betty Wood, baptised 26 August 1793 in Glossop Parish Church (named in the will of her grandfather John Bower).
Betty died on 19 October and was buried on 23 October 1793 at Glossop Parish Church.
James Wood was baptised on 6 February 1771 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Mary Ellen Hadfield (nee Lawton, widow of John Hadfield and daughter of Jarvise Lawton). They had two children:
     James Wood, baptised 21 September 1814 in Glossop Parish Church. The parish register records him as illegitimate son of Ellin Hadfield of Deepclough, widow.
     Martha Wood born about 1816, died about 1838.
Peter Wood of Hadfield, born 11 October and baptised 17 Nov 1782 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Mary Hughes and they had six children:
     Richard Wood, born 3 Nov 1810 in Glossop, baptised 1 July 1811 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Mary Wood, baptised 16 March 1813 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Mary Wood, baptised 9 April 1819 in Glossop Parish Church.
     John Wood, baptised 10 January 1821 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Robert Wood, baptised 18 April 1823 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Charles Wood, baptised 14 October 1827 in Glossop Parish Church.
Child of William Newton.
William Newton was born on 18 March and baptised on 25 May 1790 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Sarah Wood, born ca 1797 in Hayfield. They had a daughter, Betty Newton, baptised 5 March 1820 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Benjamin Platt, born 25 May 1804 in Glossop, son
of John Platt and Mary Hinchcliffe (see The Platt family of Glossop) on 5 February 1844 in Glossop Parish
Church.
