Places of Worship in Dinting and Simmondley

Simmondley Independent Chapel.

Following the founding, in 1837, of an Independent Sunday School in a room over some cottages, it was decided that a Chapel should be built. A subscription list was opened for the purpose and people from Charlesworth and Simmondley contributed. Land was purchased from Lord Howard's Estate for £30. The building of the chapel, opened in 1844, was supported by members of the community who were in the building trade. A vestry and stone cellar were added to the Chapel later. A Centenary Service took place in June 1944.

Zion Methodist, Simmondley Lane, Glossop.

Zion, an offshoot from Spring Street, Hollingworth, began with a Sunday School in a large room over the Logwood Mill, rented from Edmund Potter. As the room could only be used as a school but not for preaching, services were held in cottages lent by friends. Once a site was found, the ceremony of laying the corner stone took place on Saturday 5th August 1860. The Chapel was opened on February 17th 1861. Eight years later a large vestry, with organ gallery above, was added to the Chapel. The chapel has its own war memorial.

Holy Trinity, Dinting Vale.

The church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a stone building (the stone coming partly from Lees Hall Quarry, Glossop and partly from Slaithwaite) in the thirteenth century Gothic style and has an octagonal spire 137 feet high, the nave is 74 feet long, 26½ feet wide and 49 feet high to the apex of the roof. The north and south aisles respectively measure 74 feet long by 8¼ feet wide and 20 feet high with the chancel arch standing 34½ feet high. It was built, at a cost of approximately £6,500, through the generosity of members of the Wood family. The designers and architects were Mills and Murgatroyd of Manchester and the contractor Mr. Southern of Manchester. The foundation stone was laid in 1873 and the Church was consecrated by Bishop Selwyn, Bishop of Lichfield on July 31st 1875.
