A Slack family of Mellor and Glossop.




Generation One.

John Slack, a joiner of Tarden and Longhurst Lane, Mellor, and his wife Hannah had three identified children:
     Samuel Slack.
     John Slack, baptised 23 June 1816 in Mellor, died on 13 December 1879 at the Swan Inn, Glossop and was buried on 17 December 1879 in Glossop cemetery aged 64. He was described as a gentleman when he died. The landlord of the Swan Inn at the time was his nephew, Samuel Slack.
     Joseph Slack, baptised 20 December 1819 in Mellor, died 19 March 1888 in 36 Virginia Street, Southport. He had apparently been living at Southport for some time as he was there in 1881 when he bought the Hanging Gate pub, Glossop from the executors of David Cooper (see A Cooper family of Gamesley and Throstle Nest). In his will he left the Hanging Gate to his nephew Charles Slack, niece Sarah Ann Cuthbert and her husband David Cuthbert (the licencee).

Generation Two.

Samuel Slack was baptised on 3 October 1813 in Mellor. He married Elizabeth Green, born about 1815 in Skelmanthorpe, York, on 5 April 1835 in Glossop Parish Church. The family lived at Bridge End, Rose Green, Shepley Mill and High Street, Glossop. Samuel and Elizabeth had nine identified children:
     John Slack, baptised 17 April 1836 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Hannah Slack born in 1838.
     Joseph Slack, baptised 5 April 1840 in Glossop. The last census entry found for him was in 1861 when he was aged 21, a visitor in the house of James Shorrock at Over Darwen. He may have emigrated to Rhode Island in 1863.
     George Slack, born about 1842 in Glossop.
     Ruth Slack, born in 1844, baptised 14 April 1844 in Glossop Parish Church, died in infancy, buried 2 May 1844 at Glossop Parish Church.
     Ruth Slack born in 1845.
     Samuel Slack, born in 1848 in Glossop. He was licensee of the Swan Inn, 78 High Street East, Glossop, from 1875-1885. He married Anne Littlewood, born about 1852 in Penistone, on 9 November 1880 in Glossop Parish Church. Samuel died on 6 April 1888 and was buried on 9 April 1888 in Glossop cemetery, aged 39.
     Charles Slack born in 1851.
     Sarah Ann Slack born in 1854.
Samuel Slack died aged 67 and was buried in Glossop cemetery on 27 December 1879.
Elizabeth died aged 74 and was buried in Glossop cemetery on 9 October 1889.

Generation Three.

Hannah Slack was born in 1838 in Glossop and baptised on 25 February 1838 in Glossop Parish Church. She married Bennett Buxton, born in 1837 in Hartington (son of Bennett and Millicent Buxton), on 6 October 1862 at Sheffield parish church. They had eight identified children:
     Elizabeth Buxton, born in 1863 in Glossop.
     William Buxton, born in 1865 in Glossop.
     Millicent Ann Buxton, born in 1867 in Glossop. She married John Thomas Wood in 1896 and moved to farm at Hurst Farm.
     Samuel Joseph Buxton, born in 1869 in Glossop.
     Sarah Ann Buxton, born in 1871 in Glossop.
     Bennett Buxton, born in 1873 in Glossop.
     Ruth Amelia Buxton, born in 1875 in Glossop. She married William Shaw, 29 year old coffee dealer of 3 St Mary's Road, Glossop, on 18 December 1907 at St James', Whitfield. They had a son, Bennett Buxton Shaw born in 1908 in Glossop.
     Frank Buxton, born in 1877 in Glossop. Emigrated to Massachusetts.
Bennett was a farmer. In the census of 1871 at Hurst, farmer of 25 acres, in 1881 at Higher Jumble, farmer of 57 acres and by 1891 (and 1901) at Whitfield Barn. Also at the house in 1901 was Hannah Buxton age 9, granddaughter.
Bennett Buxton, died on 6 May 1906 in Glossop and was buried at Glossop cemetery on 2 June 1906, aged 69.
At the census of 1911 Hannah was aged 73, a widow at Hurst Villa. Also at the house were Ruth and William Shaw with their son and Hannah's granddaughters Hannah Buxton, aged 19, Mable Dawson, aged 18 and Madge Buxton aged 17.
Hannah died aged 77 and was buried on 11 September 1915 in Glossop cemetery.

Ruth Slack was born in 1845 in Glossop and baptised on 11 May 1845 in Glossop Parish Church. She married a bleacher named William Orme (son of John Orme), on 15 April 1868 in Glossop Parish Church. They had three identified children:
     Anne Orme, born in 1868 in Glossop.
     Frederick Orme, born in 1873 in Glossop.
     Elizabeth Orme, born in 1874 in Glossop (registered as Eliza at birth).
The family was at 2 St Mary's Road in the census of 1871, 102 High Street East in 1881, 2 Union Street in 1891 and finally 3 Corn Street in 1901.
Ruth died aged 64 and was buried on 4 December 1909 in Glossop cemetery.
William died aged 85 and was buried on 28 July 1925 in Glossop cemetery.

Charles Slack was born in 1851 in Glossop and baptised on 30 November 1851 in Glossop. He married Mary Byrom, born about 1849 in Glossop (daughter of Samuel Byrom), on 11 February 1875. They had three identified children:
     Laura Slack, born 1875 in Glossop, died aged 4 years and 4 months and buried in Glossop cemetery on 22 December 1879.
     Samuel Slack born 13 January 1877.
     Joseph Slack, born in 1880 in Glossop and baptised on 28 March 1886 in Glossop Parish Church.
Charles was licensee of The Palatine, Hadfield, from 1881-1890. At the census of 1891, the family was living at 3 Corn Street, where Charles, aged 40, was well enough off to be living on his own means.
No subsequent record has been found for the family as a whole as Charles and Mary separated. The 1901 Census has a record of Mary (52) and Joseph (20) at 23 Silk Street, Glossop, and a record for Charles (50) with "wife" Alice (46) and niece Elvira Bottoms (10) at 75 Moorside Road, Flixton. All were living on their own means.
Mary was buried in the same grave as Laura on 9 March 1908, aged 58.
At the 1911 census Joseph Slack (age 30 living on private means) was boarding at Back Rectory, Tintwistle, the house of Mary A Plant aged 43. Mary Alice Plant (aged 74) and Joseph Slack (aged 61) were buried in the same grave as Laura and Mary on 12 February 1942 and 30 June 1942 respectively.
Charles married Allice Ann Bottoms, born in 1856 in Glossop (daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Bottoms) on 11 March 1908 at Holy Trinity Church, Blackpool.
Also in the census of 1911, Charles Slack aged 60 (Gentleman private means) with wife of 16 years (sic) Alice Ann (55) and niece Elvira Bottoms (20) were living at 3 Roseberry Avenue, South Shore, Blackpool.
Charles Slack died on 11 February 1920 in Blackpool.

Sarah Ann Slack was born in 1854 and baptised on 23 April 1854 in Glossop Parish Church. She married David Cuthbert, born 22 June 1855, son of James Cuthbert and Hannah England (see A Cuthbert family of Glossop), on 5 February 1879 in Glossop Parish Church.

Generation Four.

Son of Charles Slack.

Samuel Slack was born on 13 January 1877 in Glossop and baptised on 28 March 1886 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Margaret Ann Shelmerdine, born 12 Jul 1877, in 1895. They had three identified children:
     Laura Slack, born in 1896 in Stalybridge.
     Charles Slack, born in 1891 in Glossop.
     Samuel Slack, born in 1902 in Glossop.
Samuel was licensee of the Hanging Gate, Glossop, from 1899 to 1909 and of The Palatine, Hadfield, from 1907 to 1920. The family is recorded at the two pubs in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
In the 1939 register Samuel (retired publican) and Margaret are recorded at 25 Silk Street, Glossop.
Samuel Slack died aged 71 and was buried in Glossop cemetery on 19 April 1948.
Margaret died aged 73 and was buried in Glossop cemetery on 19 April 1951.
