The family of Robert Hadfield of Throstle Nest.

Generation One.

Robert Hadfield was born 22 March and baptised 23 May 1784 in Glossop. He was the son of William Hadfield and Martha Goodison (see A Hadfield family of Whitfield). He married Martha Collier on 23 November 1807 in Glossop. The family is recorded at Green Vale in the 1841 census; Robert was a 57 year old farmer and Martha's age given as 55. Robert and Martha had eight children:
William Hadfield, born 8 August and baptised 3 September 1809 at All Saints, Glossop. He died at the age of 8 months and was buried on 21 March 1810 in Glossop church yard.
Betty Hadfield, born 23 February and baptised 31 Mar 1811 in Glossop. The baptism entry says the family lived at Throstle Nest. She died at the age of 1 year and was buried on 5 April 1812 in Glossop.
Robert Hadfield, baptised 3 May 1813 in Glossop. The baptism entry describes his father as a shopkeeper of Whitfield. No census entries found.
Martha Hadfield, baptised 22 March 1816, died aged 22 and buried on 5 April 1838 at Glossop Parish Church. The baptism entry describes her father as a cotton spinner of Whitfield.
Betty Hadfield, baptised 11 April 1819 in Glossop. The baptism entry describes her father as a cotton carder of Whitfield. Her age was given as 20 in the 1841 census.
William Hadfield, baptised 16 April 1822 in Glossop. The baptism entry describes his father as a cotton spinner of Whitfield. The 1841 census gives his age as 15, cotton spinner. He possibly married Ann Bray, 20 May 1845 at Glossop.
Christopher Hadfield, baptised 13 Jun 1824 in Glossop. The baptism entry describes his father as a farmer of Whitfield. The 1841 census gives his age as 15, cotton spinner.
Meshach Hadfield, baptised 21 October 1827 in Glossop.
Robert Hadfield was listed as a freeholder of Wren Nest in the 1832 Poll Book. He died on 16 September (according to the Admon record) and was buried on 18 September 1841 in Glossop (according to the parish register).
Martha Hadfield died 3 July 1845 (a widow of Wren Nest, Glossop). She named Robert, William, Christopher, Meshach and Betty as her beneficiaries and William and Meshach as executors of her will which was dated 19 June 1845 (probate granted 27 June 1846).
Robert, William, Christopher, Meshach and Betty are all named in a Deed of Covenant dated 27th July 1846 (see The Hadfield Family Farm at Whitfield and Cross Cliffe Mill) but, other than Meshach and Betty, have not been positively identified in subsequent records.

Generation Two.

Betty Hadfield was baptised on 11 April 1819 in Glossop.
She had a daughter, Martha Hadfield, about 1843 in Whitfield. Martha was baptised on 7 July 1844 at St James, Whitfield.
Betty married Hugh Cooper, baptised 4 June 1814 in Mottram in Longdendale, son of Benjamin Cooper and Elizabeth (Betty) Tym (see A Cooper family of Gamesley and Throstle Nest), on 18 March 1847 at St James, Whitfield.

Meshach Hadfield was baptised on 21 October 1827 in Glossop. The baptism entry describes his father as a farmer of Whitfield. The 1841 census gives his age as 13, cotton weaver. He was one of the executors of his mother's will. Meshach married Bridget Powers on 5 November 1850 in Manchester Cathedral. In the 1851 census her age was given as 21, a warper born in Ireland. Meshach was a 23 year old weaver, the family living at Green Vale. The census also records a visitor, Mary Powers age 23, born Manchester, warper. Meshach and Bridget must have emigrated to America shortly after the 1851 census as their six children were born there:
Mary Hadfield. In the 1860 US census she is aged 6, born in Philadelphia. In the 1870 US Census 1870, aged 16, recorded as Mary E. Hadfield, born New Jersey.
Ann Hadfield, born in Philadelphia. The census records her age as 4, 14 (a weaver) and 23 in 1860, 1870 and 1880 respectively.
Martha Hadfield, born in Philadelphia. The census records her age as 2, 12 (a weaver) and 21 in 1860, 1870 and 1880 respectively.
Thomas Hadfield, born 14 February 1861 in Philadelphia but died the next day.
John Hadfield, born 5 April 1864 in Pennsylvania. The census records his age as 6 and 15 in 1870 and 1880 respectively.
William Hadfield, born in Pennsylvania. The census records his age as 3 and 12 in 1870 and 1880 respectively.
Meshach and Bridget appear to have been guardians of a Margaret B Schofield who died aged 4 months on 2 July 1869.
The US census records for Meshach are: 1860, age 32, weaver, 19th ward, Philadelphia; 1870, age 42, weaver, Aston township, Delaware; 1880, age 51, weaver, 23rd ward, Philadelphia City, widowed.
Bridget is recorded in the US Census of 1860, age 29, but not in any other census records so presumably died before 1870.
