The Garlick family of Pikes and The Junction.
Generation One.
John Garlick of Pikes was born about 1770, d. 1 February 1818, buried in Glossop Parish Church. He married Mary Shepley, born about 1763, daughter of William and Mary Shepley of Charlesworth (see A Shepley family of Charlesworth) on 6 July 1794 in Glossop Parish Church. They had eight known children but more than eight in total as their MI says they had eight who died in infancy:
     Mariah Garlick, baptised in 5 January 1798 in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Alice Garlick, born 26 November and baptised 1 December 1798 in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Elisabeth Garlick, born 26 November and baptised 1 December 1798 in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Genney Garlick, born 11 February and baptised 27 February 1800 in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Elen Garlick, born 24 April and baptised 25 June 1801 in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Hannah Garlick, born 25 April and baptised 5 October 1802 in St Mary's Charlesworth, buried 30 August 1809 in Glossop Parish Church.
     Emma Garlick born 25 December 1803.
     Martha Garlick, born 12 October and baptised 17 December 1805 in St Mary's Charlesworth, died aged 19 12 March and buried 16 March 1825 in Glossop Parish Church.
John Garlick built the Junction Inn in 1817 on the Pike Plantation.
John Garlick died, aged 76, on 1 February 1818 and was buried at Glossop Parish Church.
Mary died, aged 65, on 15 February and was buried on 19 February 1828 at Glossop Parish Church.
Generation Two.
Emma Garlick was born on 25 December 1803 and baptised on 20 January 1804 in St Mary's Charlesworth. She married Thomas Garlick, born 27 January 1798, son of John Garlick and Lettice Howard (see The Howards of Ludworth and Bridgefield) on 30 April 1829 in Glossop Parish Church. They had three children:
     John Howard Garlick born 25 September 1829.
     William Shepley Garlick, baptised 25 January 1833 in St Mary's Charlesworth, died in the 13th year of his age on 8 May 1845, buried in St Mary's Charlesworth.
     Catherine Mary Shepley Garlick, born in 1839, died, aged 35, on 19 August 1874, buried in St Mary's Charlesworth. She married John William Holt of Droylesden on 19 March 1864 in Manchester Cathedral.
Thomas was landlord of the Junction Inn from 1837 to 1849 and Emma was landlady from 1850-52.
Thomas Garlick died, in the 52nd year of his age, on 25 December 1849 and was buried in St Mary's Charlesworth.
Emma Garlick died on 9 November 1872 and was buried in St Mary's Charlesworth.
Generation Three.
John Howard Garlick was born on 25 September 1829 in Glossop and baptised on 3 January 1830 in Glossop Parish Church. He married Zipporah Robinson, born 15 April 1832 in Glossop, daughter of Joseph Robinson and Mary Oates (see The Robinsons of Gnat Hole) on 24 November 1857 in Glossop. John and Zipporah had seven children:
     Mary Emma Garlick, died 9 February 1863 aged 4 years 4 months, buried in St James's Whitfield.
     Joseph Robinson Garlick born 1861.
     William Shepley Garlick, born 1862, died 31 August 1870, buried 10 September 1870 in St James's Whitfield.
     Mary Eliza Garlick, born 1865 in Manchester. 1881 census says she was 16 years old, born Manchester. 1891 census aged 26.
     Jessy Garlick, baptised 23 August 1866 in Chorlton upon Medlock, St Paul, died before October 1897. She married Robert Joseph William Oates, born 19 December 1861, son of Joseph Henry and Emily Elizabeth Oates (see The Oates family of Handsworth and Glossop) on 5 September 1889 in Didsbury.
     Kate Howard Garlick, born 1868 in Manchester. 1901 census aged 34 living in Joseph's house.
     Zipporah Garlick, born February 1869, died 24 September and buried 26 September 1870 in St James's Whitfield.
John was landlord of the Junction Inn, Glossop 1852-53 (he is shown as in keeper, aged 21, there in the 1851 census. At the 1861 census he is a 31 year old cashier, the family living at Percival Street, Chorlton Upon Medlock, next door to Zipporah's uncle George and family. In Morris's Directories of Ashton under Lyne for 1874 & 1878 he is listed under "Gentry, Clergy & Private Residences" at 1 Mavesyn Place, Audenshaw. The family was still there in the 1881 census.
In the 1891 census Zipporah was the widowed head of household at Chorlton-Cum-Hardy. Also in the house were two cousins, both born in East India - Herbert C Oates aged 19 and Florence M Oates aged 15.
John Howard Garlick died on 8 November 1890 in Chorlton cum Hardy. He was a cashier of The Hollies, Stockton Range Chorlton cum Hardy when he died.
Zipporah died on 17 January 1898, aged 65, and was buried on 21 January 1898 in Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-Cum-Hardy. Her home address was "Newholme" Park Road, St Annes.
Generation Four.
Joseph Robinson Garlick was born on 25 January 1861 in Manchester and baptised on 16 March 1861 in St James's Whitfield. He married Janet Allan, baptised 4 July 1878 in St James's' Church, Accrington (daughter of Alexander and Alice Allan) on 10 February 1902 in St Mary, Prestwich, Lancashire. Joseph was a widower. His first marriage has not been definitely identified. Joseph and Janet had three children:
     John Alexander Garlick, baptised 14 March 1903 in St Thomas, Radcliffe, Lancashire.
     Mary Kathleen Garlick, baptised 3 February 1906 in Stand, Lancashire. She married William D Briggs in 1932.
     Nora Garlick, born 31 January 1910, baptised 5 March 1910 in Stand, Lancashire. She married Edward F Hunt in 1938.
Joseph Alexander Garlick died on 22 April 1922. He was a bank manager of Tresco, Hamilton Road, Whitfield, Manchester at the time.
Janet died on 8 July 1956 in Prestwich. She was living at Flat 6, Hilton Hall, Prestwich at the time.
