James was born in
Glossop, Derbyshire, on the 26th
April 1889. He enlisted at Trentham, New Zealand, 13th
October 1914, stating his occupation as a labourer, and his address
as Shannon, New Zealand.
He was five feet five and a quarter
inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair,
and he belonged to the Church of England. He had a small mole on his
left forearm.
