Thomas was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, on the 28th December, 1890. He enlisted at Featherston, New Zealand, 24th August 1916, stating his occupation as a ploughman, his address as St. Andrew's, New Zealand, and his next of kin as Mary Heap, of 8, Castle Hill, Glossop, Derbyshire.
He was five feet six and a half inches in height, had a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair, and he belonged to the Church of England.
