James was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, on the 15th February, 1890. He enlisted in Sarnia, Ontario, 27th January, 1915 stating his occupation as an oiler aboard a steamship, and his next of kin as his wife, Emily Bennett, of 176, Ontario Street, Sarnia, Ontario.
He was five feet four and a half inches in height, had a dark complexion, grey eyes and dark hair, and he was a Roman Catholic.
